Ask coach Donna J. Jodhan – are battery operated can openers better to use than manual or electric ones?

Ask the Coach!

June 19 2023

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this week:  a question from Lucas in Burlington Vermont.

Lucas would like to know if battery operated can openers are better to use than electric can openers?

My response:

Well Lucas, my preference would be to use the battery operated one as somehow I feel more comfortable using this type of opener.

I think that there are  advantages for both

The best way may be for you to try both types and then to make up your mind.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

The Post Pandemic Landscape – It’s Here To Stay

The Post Pandemic Landscape

There is no denying it!  Now that we are into the post Pandemic era we are going to need to pack such things as an abundance of patience, fortitude, and understanding when we travel for the foreseeable future.  This in addition to our Covid kits; hand sanitizers, masks, and wipes.

I can confirm this as at the end of May I traveled from Toronto to Portugal on an Air Canada flight and I am very pleased to share that this airline, my national airline; went way and above the call of duty to ensure that my needs as a vision impaired passenger were met.  Most importantly, they ensured that I was never wanting for anything.

As soon as I arrived at the check in counter, a warm and friendly Air Canada agent was there to welcome me.  She processed  my passport, tagged my luggage and then another agent escorted my friend and me through security and then to the departure gate.

What greatly impressed me was that this agent stayed close by as I went through security ensuring that I was always given appropriate attention.  She never left my side and described everything to me; that being what was going on in my immediate surroundings.

When we arrived at the departure gate, my friend and I were seated close to the agent desk and we were among the first to be boarded.

In flight Service was excellent and upon arrival at Lisbon Airport, we were among the first to be deplaned.

This excellent service continued on our return journey.  Again, we were among the first to be boarded, in flight service was terrific and when we arrived at Pearson Airport, we were among the first to be deplaned.

The Air Canada agent made this final leg of the journey extremely bearable under very trying circumstances as when we arrived Pearson Airport was very busy with several other incoming flights in the bustling mid afternoon.

This very happy go lucky agent stayed with me as I had to deal with CBSA agents when they came to process my Arrive Can papers.  She walked with us as we found our luggage and escorted us to our final point where I said a very grateful goodbye and thanked her for her excellent service.

I will hasten to add that if I as a traveler who is vision impaired expects any airline to assist me to adequately navigate an airport both at departure and upon arrival then it is up to me to ensure that said airline is notified of my needs and requirements ahead of time.

This is what I did in the case of this trip and the Air Canada team at their MEDA desk worked to ensure that all was well.

In addition, it is up to me to arrive at the airport well ahead of time thus giving airline staff every opportunity to be of assistance.  At the end of the day, it is all about teamwork!  Me doing my part and a well trained front line staff of an airline doing theirs.

And this is exactly what occurred between me and the Air Canada staff.

My final thoughts?  The post Pandemic landscape is going to dictate future changes for years to come!

Just my two cents for today!

Ask coach Donna – how to open jars and bottles without a proper opener

June 12 2023

Ask the Coach!

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this week:  a question from Shannon in Ulster Ireland.

Shannon is looking for ways to open bottles and jars if she does not have either a proper bottle or jar opener.

My response:

Shannon, I learned this nifty little trick many moons ago from my granny and I was quite surprised to learn that this does work.

It is all about the use of a rubber band.

Just take a rubber band that is thick enough.

You may also want to use 2 of them depending on the width and thickness of the cork or lid.

Fit the rubber band or rubber bands around the cork or lid.

Then start turning from left to right.

Soon you will feel that the rubber band or rubber bands would have gained traction and the cork or lid will start to loosen.

10 Surprising Uses For Leftover Bananas
BY Emily Petsko
August 14, 2018
Bananas are practically the perfect fruit. They’re high in potassium and vitamins. They don’t need to be washed or sliced. They make a great healthy snack, but you can also put them in bread, ice cream, pie, and pancakes. What’s not to love?
Well, there’s one tiny problem, they go bad quickly. Bananas produce a large amount of a gas called ethylene, which causes fruit to ripen faster, meaning that there’s a small window to enjoy them. Just because a bunch of bananas is past its prime doesn’t mean they can’t be used, though. Here are a few of the things you can do with ripe bananas.
1. TREAT BUG BITES.
Pressing the inside of a banana peel onto a bite from a mosquito or other insect for a few minutes is a surprisingly simple way to quell itching. In fact, some studies have shown that banana peels can help reduce irritation and inflammation. The use of banana peels to treat inflammation is said to be an ancient Chinese remedy, but people around the world swear (with varying degrees of evidence) by the fruit’s ability to soothe poison ivy rashes, psoriasis, sunburn, and other skin maladies.
2. REMOVE A SPLINTER.
If tweezers aren’t getting that pesky splinter out, try a banana peel instead. Tape a piece of the peel onto the affected area (with the soft, inner side of the peel facing down) and leave it in place for about 10 minutes. The enzymes in the fruit should help to force the splinter out.
3. ATTRACT BUTTERFLIES AND HUMMINGBIRDS.
Once a common sight in the U.S., monarch butterflies are now difficult to spot. Their population has dwindled due to loss of habitat, but you can improve your chances of seeing them by placing an overripe banana out in your garden. They’re just soft and sweet enough for butterflies to enjoy (make sure to remove the bananas before you go to bed, though, or else you’ll have animals like raccoons in your garden). You can also place bananas near a hummingbird feeder to attract fruit flies, which the birds feast on.
4. FERTILIZE PLANTS.
While you’re out in the garden feeding the birds and butterflies, give your plants some love, too. When cut-up banana peels are buried, they enrich the soil with nutrients and help nourish plants. You can also wrap a banana peel around a tomato plant to create a natural fertilizer.
5. POLISH LEATHER AND SILVER.
If you’re in need of a quick shoe shine, reach for the fruit bowl. The potassium in bananas make them a great, quick tool for polishing your leather. Simply buff the leather with the inside of a banana peel, and use a cloth to wipe it clean. The same technique can also be used to polish silver (though some recommend blending the banana peels into a paste and putting that on a cloth for polishing).
6. MAKE SMOOTHIES.
Bananas have long been a staple in smoothies, but what if you have a whole bunch that’s about to go bad? Instead of throwing them out, stick them in the freezer. You can pull one out any time you get a smoothie craving, and since it’s frozen, you won’t even need to add ice.
7. MAKE NATURAL BEAUTY PRODUCTS.
Beauty products don’t have to be expensive. Bananas are a great ingredient in do it yourself hair treatments and skin exfoliants. The amino and citric acids help protect hair from damage and keep it shiny. There are a few different recipes you can try, some of which combine banana with avocado, yogurt, egg, and other ingredients. Rubbing the inside of a banana peel onto your face (seriously, try it) is also said to brighten your skin, fight acne, and reduce puffiness around your eyes.
8. PREVENT INFLAMED MUSCLES.
A recent study published in the journal PLOS One found that competitive cyclists who had consumed a banana instead of a sugary drink or water had less inflammation following their workout. Although other physicians cite the benefits of consuming bananas post-workout, the sample for this particular study was small, only 20 cyclists, and was funded by Dole Foods (although they had no role in any part of the study), so you might not want to swap out ibuprofen for bananas just yet, especially since the lead author told The New York Times that the banana led to “quite a bit of bloating,” so maybe best to not experiment on race day.
9. REPAIR A SCRATCHED DVD.
CDs and DVDs may be a dying technology, but many people still have a few lying around at home. If you have any discs that are scratched, you can try using toothpaste and banana to salvage them. First, rub toothpaste into the scratches with a cloth. Wipe it off, then rub a piece of banana onto the disc in a circular motion. Do the same thing with the banana peel and clean the disc with window cleaner. Whether or not this trick works will depend on how badly the disc is scratched, but it’s worth a shot!
10. TRY OUT SOME NEW RECIPES.
If a bunch of bananas is too ripe for your liking, try repurposing the fruit. There are hundreds of recipes that call for overripe bananas. The Food Network’s Canadian site lists 83 recipes on its website, including chocolate chip banana pancakes, a peanut butter and banana oatmeal smoothie, and slow cooker banana upside down cake.

More websites need to be accessible

I would like to call myself a good seasoned traveler and over the past many years I have had the luxury of traveling both across Canada as well as internationally.
I have traveled economy, business class, by air, by train, and on cruiselines.

For the most part, I have had to depend on my trusty travel agent to help me plan and book my travel and much as I enjoy working with her, I would really like to see more websites make it possible for blind/vision impaired travelers like me to be able to at least book my own trips.

Some websites are a bit better than others when it comes to being able to book trips while others really need to become much more accessible and inclusive. Nothing is more nerve racking when forms for booking trips are difficult to navigate, use, and complete

Added to this is that being able to obtain online help is quite difficult and at the end of the day I am forced to go back to my trusty travel agent.
Here’s hoping to see some positive changes soon.

I’m Donna J. Jodhan enjoying my travels.

When A Reckless Message Is Offered – Damaging To Any Company

When a reckless message is offered.

I can tell you that when you have customer reps who simply do not think before they deliver the message, more often than not it leads to some big time damage for a company.

This is what happened not too long ago when I phoned the accessibility Centre at Bell Canada to ask how I would go about retrieving phone messages from my inbox in Toronto from outside of North America.  The rep’s response simply left me shaking my head.

She told me that I did not need to retrieve phone messages while I was away from home because  I should simply forget about messages while being away.

When I told her that I would need to respond to any important phone messages if there were any, she simply told me that I should just forget about these messages.  In addition, she told me that there was no way for me to retrieve phone messages from outside of North America through the Bell Canada network.

I was simply horrified and when I got to my destination then lo and behold!  I found a way to retrieve my phone messages.

The lesson here is that Bell Canada needs to provide its customer reps with information that is accurate but above all; they should be training their customer reps to be more professional when dealing with customers.

My final thought?  This particular customer service agent should be disciplined, given some serious  training, and maybe made to do some volunteer work.

Just my two cents for today.

Ask Coach Donna J. Jodhan – how to organize one’s suitcase

Ask the Coach!

June 05 2022

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this week:  a question from Maryanne in Boston.

Maryanne is looking for some tips on organizing her suitcase.

My response:

Maryanne, a few months ago I discovered a nifty way of organizing my suitcase and it is so very easy coming to think about it.

My friend introduced me to the vac pack; and it is a set of various sizes of nylon bags that you can pack with your different clothes and before zipping it up you just squeeze the air out of it and voila!  The pack condenses into a flat bag.

So here is what I have done.

Underwear in one bag.

Blouses in another bag.

Shorts and pants in another bag.

Skirts in another bag.

Other stuff in other bags.

Shoes are the only things that you will need to pack outside of these bags.

I like these bags because they are light weight, they are of the right sizes, and they do not take up much space in my suitcase.

This is an 8 set pack of bags and I bought mine on Amazon.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

To contact me with a question or a thought; please send an email to me at donnajodhan@gmail.com and I’ll be sure to respond in 5 business days at the most.

If you wish me to respond earlier then put the word important in your subject line and I’ll do my best to respond more quickly.

Until the next time then!

I’m Donna wishing you a pleasant day and thanking everyone for their insightful feedback and suggestions!

Welcome to my Donna’s did you know diary for May and pleased to share the following with you.

Here’s what I learned for this month.

  • All about bird songs

“You might have noticed that often the smallest birds have the most interesting songs. The various wrens, for example, are among the smallest birds in North America, but they have incredibly loud voices and many complex songs. On the other hand, while bald eagles are among the largest of all birds, their “song” and calls are unremarkable unless threatened by some predator. Eagles are indeed loud, but they have a limited vocabulary.

Have you ever noticed in early summer that the hills are alive with the sound of birds singing? These beautiful creatures made for our enjoyment actually sing for many different reasons. There are basically two categories of bird sounds: songs and calls. Singing primarily happens around mating and nesting season. Calls happen all the time and mainly communicate messages to other birds, often in shorter and clipped chirps. Songs are usually longer and more complex.

Birds sing to stake out their territory, defend their turf, identify themselves, attract the opposite sex, stimulate nest building, and encourage the female to incubate her eggs. Some studies also show that birds sing just because they like to sing! Biologists have also discovered that birds have accents; the same cardinal in Indiana might sound slightly different than one in Florida.

  • Okay, here is something to help you with the cold and it is called Vicks vapour rub

It comes in a jar and its scent is wonderfully strong.

Rub a bit of this on your throat, your chest, and at the bottom of your feet.

Insert a we bit of it into your nostrils and voala!

It works like a charm!

  • Different types of vacations?

Vacation = a holiday.

Staycation = spending vacation at home.

Worcation = combining work and play.

  • An important tip for both men and women enjoying their drinks:

If both a man and a woman are enjoying the same amount of drinks then please remember that if they are doing this under the same circumstances

Women will become intoxicated more quickly because of their biological make up.

That is on the whole, women way less than men.

  • So which part of the lobster is the meatiest?

Why!  It is the tail of course!

  • Want to learn more about holiday spending in America?

Here are the top 7 holidays along with spending trends.

“The top seven holidays for extravagant spending are:

7 –  Halloween, share of total holiday spending: 2.6 percent.

6 – Father’s Day, Share of holiday spending: 4.5 percent.

5 –  Easter, Share of holiday spending: 6.1 percent

4 –  Mother’s Day, Share of holiday spending: 6.5 percent

3 –  Valentine’s Day, Share of holiday spending: 7.7 percent.

2 –  Thanksgiving, Share of holiday spending: 13.4 percent.

1 –  Christmas, Share of holiday spending: 59.2 percent.”

  • What is a good tea to drink when you are having digestive problems?

Try drinking a cup of hot camomile tea.

  • Here are some home grown tips about dogs!

Normally their noses are cold and wet to the touch.

If their nose happens to be warm to mildly hot then they may be having a fever.

Female dogs normally have a 3 week period when they are in heat.

The important week to note when they are most likely to become pregnant is during week two.

If you are attempting to mate them then make sure to note the position of their tail when they meet the mail.

If their tail goes down then they are not interested

But if their tail goes up then they are interested.

Female dogs take approximately 9 weeks to bring their pregnancy to fruition.

They usually come into their calling or heat period every six months.

Finally, if you wish to get an idea of how many pups the female may be having then count the number of protruding nipples.

There is normally 1 nipple for every pup on the way.

It normally takes 9 weeks for a female to be pregnant.
