No Room At The Inn – Your Round Table Is Missing Someone Very Important

No room at the inn.

And no!  I am not referring to Mary and Joseph when so many years ago they attempted to find lodgings at an inn just as Mary was just about ready to give birth to Infant Jesus!

What am I referring to today?  It is this!

These days, many Federal Government departments are scrambling to file their plans under the Accessible Canada Act before the closing deadline which is fast approaching.

Many Federal entities are frantically searching for ways to meet these as well!

And oodles and oodles of organizations for and of Canadians with disabilities are simply climbing over each other to get in on a piece of the action!

What is the missing piece of the puzzle here?

In my very respectful opinion, and once more, the person on the street is being shut out!

No room at the inn!  Their pleas and voices are simply not being heard and as I like to think of it there is absolutely no room at the inn for those of us who do not meet any of the following criteria.

We do not belong to any recognized organization or we are not a member of any recognized advisory group.

The barriers to applying for Federal Government posts are simply too high for us to scale and why?

Because the online system for applying is not very accessible, is not navigable, and no one seems able to rectify this.

Departments continue to refuse to engage and communicate with the person on the street choosing instead to go through those organizations who hand pick their reps from within rather than engaging in a more meaningful process of reaching out.

Many folks have simply become unfortunately fed-up with all of the above and have chosen to ignore these anemic actions choosing instead to go their own way and to do their own thing!

Do I personally blame them?  No!

What to do then?

These attitude barriers need to be brought down and a new way needs to be hashed out if any sort of meaningful dialogue is to take place!

Please start listening to the person on the street!  You would be amazed to discover how much they can teach you and how much you are missing out on!

My final word? Please take a long hard look at your round table and realize that someone very important is missing and needs to be invited!

Just my two cents for today!

A Review of Quebec City — The Perfect Spring Getaway

A photo of a beautiful cobblestone courtyard in historic downtown Quebec City.

A Review of Quebec City
by Donna Jodhan, award winning advocate and sight loss coach

Introduction:
Quebec City is probably one of the most delightful cities in Canada. Refreshing, welcoming, and friendly. Accommodating, enjoyable, and a city that you would want to visit over and over again!

This is the perfect city to explore at this time of the year.

So how would I rate this city’s services? With 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest, here are my ratings.
Customer service assistance at stores etc – 5
Assistance at hotels for guests with special needs – 5
Assistance at restaurants – 5

Remarks :
Access to restaurants was extremely user friendly for a vision impaired person and navigating among the tables was not very difficult.
Social distancing was closely maintained and the wearing of masks was strictly adhered to when going to the bathroom.

About restaurant staff:
Extremely friendly, welcoming, and more than willing to communicate in both French and English.

My meals:
Beyond expectation! Tasty and creative!
Large servings and yummy with a strong flair for gusto!

Any suggestions?
You must take time to visit this wonderfully quaint city!

If You Can See It Then I Have A Right To Know About It – We Are All Entitled

If you can see it then I have a right to know about it.

This is what the majority of blind and partially sighted persons continue to be challenged with.  For some very unexplainable reason, too many sighted folks do not seem to be able to understand this concept let alone be able to rectify this huge glitch.

There are certain Federal Government entities that I shall not mention that honestly believe that when it comes to providing information, it is more than acceptable for a blind/partially sighted person to ask a sighted individual to tell them what it is.  Their very lame excuse is that the information in question is not really private so it is very okay for a sighted person to tell the one who is blind and/or partially sighted what it is.

I respectfully and humbly submit that this excuse is not an excuse.  It is disrespectful, condescending, and frankly humiliating and degrading.

No one should be able to tell the blind/partially sighted person what they should and should not consider to be private.    For after all, if the sender of the information wanted to make the information public, all they would need to do is to send it either in a postcard or in a flyer or maybe even in an unsealed envelope.

As long as the information is sealed or sent in a rip open envelope, then it is meant to be private and as long as this is so then a blind/partially sighted person has a right to know what it is independently and without any sighted assistance.

Everyone has a right to privacy and everyone has a right to read his/her own information.

My final thoughts?

Our world is made up of everyone!  Sighted, non sighted, mainstream, and those with a disability!

Let us not forget this!

Just my two cents for today.

Ask coach Donna J. Jodhan – can a blind person learn how to knit?

Ask the Coach!

May 17 2023

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this week:  a question from Gina in Washington DC.

Gina would like to learn how to knit but is hesitant as a blind person.  Are there any tips?

My response:

Gina, as someone who is also blind/vision impaired, it has taken me several years of on and off lessons to really get the hang of knitting.

I do not think that it is due to my being blind/vision impaired but rather my commitment to it and to find a teacher who is willing and ready to work with me.

Along the way I have had a few teachers but my present teacher Susan is a real gem.  She is a retired teacher and she is always coming up with ways to help me.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

To contact me with a question or a thought; please send an email to me at donnajodhan@gmail.com and I’ll be sure to respond in 5 business days at the most.

If you wish me to respond earlier then put the word important in your subject line and I’ll do my best to respond more quickly.

Until the next time then!

I’m Donna wishing you a pleasant day and thanking everyone for their insightful feedback and suggestions!

10 Surprising Uses for Cotton Swabs
BY Michele Debczak
October 18, 2018
If you stick cotton swabs inside your ears, you’re using them wrong. Despite being perfectly-sized to slide inside your ear canal, cotton swabs are never meant to go deeper than the outermost part of your ear, and if they do they could inflict serious damage on your hearing. That doesn’t mean they’re not worth having in your home: From beauty, to chores, to arts and crafts, here are some smart, and safe, uses for the hygiene products.
1. SHINE JEWELRY
When it comes to cleaning precious items like jewelry, cotton swabs are the right tools for the job. The cotton ends are gentle enough to handle valuable materials and make them look brand new. After soaking your jewelry in a cleaning solution, rub it gently with your fingers and use a cotton swab to clean out the detailed areas. Rinse it and set it out to dry before returning it to your jewelry box, or your finger.
2. PAINT POLKA DOTS
Get in touch with your inner Yayoi Kusama and break out the cotton swabs for your next art project. Whether you’re painting polka dots on a mug, birthday card, or bedroom wall, start by selecting paint in the color you want to work with. Using cotton swabs in place of a paintbrush, you can create a pattern of tiny, even dots on any surface. Once the project is complete, toss your swabs away instead spending extra time washing art supplies.
3. CLEAN ELECTRONICS
The nooks and crannies of your computer’s keyboard and the edges of your phone case, a.k.a surfaces you touch everyday, are magnets for dirt. If you can’t remember the last time you cleaned your electronics, set aside time to sanitize them with cotton swabs as soon as possible. Cotton swabs are designed to clean delicate parts of your skin, which makes them perfect for cleaning expensive personal devices. They’re also the right size for reaching the tight corners where years’ worth of dust and grime like to hide. Just soak the cotton ends in rubbing alcohol before you begin your cleaning spree.
4. LIGHT A CANDLE
Tall candles last a long time, but they also become difficult to light toward the end of their lifespan. If you don’t have a grill lighter or extra-long matches at home, you can use a cotton swab to light a hard-to-reach wick. Soak one end in alcohol before carefully lighting it with a match or lighter and then dip it into the candle holder. Make sure you have a cup of water nearby so you can extinguish it quickly.
5. TOUCH-UP PAINT JOBS
Chipped paint on your walls or furniture is no reason to break out your paint brushes. If you already have paint in the matching color at home, all you need is a cotton swab to apply it. Cotton swabs are especially convenient for those smaller home touch-ups you’ve been putting off for months.
6. CLEAN YOUR CAR’S INTERIOR
Before paying someone to detail your car’s interior, see what you can do with a pack of cotton swabs. After clearing your vehicle of any trash or junk, you can use cotton swabs and cleaning liquid to tackle those areas that are often neglected, like cup holders, the seams in your steering wheel, and the cracks in your seats. For dirty car floors, you’ll need to use a vacuum cleaner.
7. REMOVE SCUFFS FROM SHOES
A few bad scuff marks may be enough to convince you never to wear nice shoes outside again. But even when they’re on patent leather, most unsightly scratches can be erased. Just soak the end of a cotton swab in nail polish remover and gently scrub the damaged area with it. Follow that up by covering the same area with either baby powder or petroleum jelly, in order to protect the material itself. It shouldn’t take long for your shoes to look smooth, shiny, and ready for your next formal event.
8. COLOR ONE STRAND OF HAIR AT A TIME
Not every color touch-up warrants a trip to the hairdresser. If you notice a few stray undyed hairs messing up your newly-colored ‘do, you can take care of them with some cotton swabs and a touch-up kit. Once you’ve applied the colorant to the swab, carefully brush it over the strand, wait 10 minutes, and rinse it out. Using a cotton swab gives you enough control to dye one strand at a time without touching the surrounding hair.
9. FIX A STUCK ZIPPER
Many jackets have been thrown away due to a stuck zipper. If the zipper on your favorite piece of clothing won’t budge, see what a little lubricant can do. Apply petroleum jelly, soap, olive oil, or something similar to the problem area with a cotton swab and gently tug at it until the snag loosens.
10. ASSEMBLE A TRAVEL BEAUTY KIT
The complex beauty routine you enjoy every morning becomes a lot less appealing when you’re away from home. Give yourself some extra room in your travel bag by preparing a scaled-down beauty kit. Instead of packing your eyeshadow palette, apply your eye makeup to the ends of cotton swabs instead and store them in a plastic bag. Once you’ve reached your destination, just pull out the swabs, swipe them over your eyelids, and toss them out when you’re done. This trick also works with lip gloss and perfume.

Emergency kit for travel

Covid may be less of an evil at the present time but I still take my precautions and when I know that it is always going to be difficult for me as a vision impaired person to find things easily in public spaces here are some items that I pack in my emergency kit and place it in my carry on.

Hand sanitizers, wet wipes, and masks. Then I also pack the staple things such as Aspirin, Tylenol, and a tiny tube of toothpaste and a tooth brush.
A handful of Life Savers candies, and of course my trusty chargers for my phone and MP3 player.

There are always other things that you can add but for now this is it for me.

Ask Coach Donna Jodhan – how difficult is it to learn pottery?

Ask the Coach!

May 10 2023

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this week:  a question from  Lucas in Salem Oregon.

Lucas would like to know how difficult is it to learn pottery?

My response:

Lucas, if you enjoy building things with your hands, enjoy playing with clay, and also like to paint what you have made then this is the first part to enjoying pottery.

If you are a vision impaired person as I am, then you should look for a teacher who wants to work with vision impaired potters.  Patience is also a good thing to have and creativity is also a must.

I enjoy my pottery a great deal and my present teacher Shaun is really great!  He is always eager to help me create new things with a twist!

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Ina would like to know some of the things that she could pack in her carry on when flying.

My response:

Ina, there are certain guidelines for the size of tubes and bottles that you can pack in your carry on and so as to be very sure of these guidelines, you should consult with your travel agent or the airline that you are flying with.

For me, I make very sure to adhere to these guidelines.  I also carry a hairbrush, and things such as masks, a pocket size bottle of hand sanitizer, small pack of tissues, mints or life savers candies, my I device, laptop computer, and my medication in small bottles.  Also, some pills for an upset stomach, Tylenol, and similar stuff.
