The Kid Who Told Me About Hate – Lesson Learned

The kid who told me about hate.

A few weeks ago I enjoyed a lovely dinner with my friend and her son but just imagine my surprise when this very gentle, kind, and thoughtful youngster told me that he did not like to hear his peers use the word hate.

What a surprise but most of all!  What a relief!  For alas!  A tiny piece of our future who does not believe in hate nor does he believe in bullying!

Young Tyler was very fervent, firm, and forthright in his comments.  Upon further conversation, he told me that too many of his friends and peers loved to use the word hate whenever they either had a disagreement with a friend or simply wanted to intimidate said friend.

When I asked him why he hated this word he simply told me that it was wrong and not a very nice word to use.

At the end of our dinner I said a silent Prayer of thanks to God for little Tyler and asked God to send us more of those kids who are likeminded to Tyler.

My final thoughts?  Tyler sparks hope in me that there is a fighting chance that our future can be saved!

Just my two cents for today.

General tips

Scams of the month:
Before giving you our scam tips of the month, here are some very valueable tips.
You need to remember that scams come in the following formats:
As emails, as phone calls both recorded and via a live caller, and o yes! It can even show up at your door and in your mailbox.
And now they are targeting us through texts being sent to our cell phones.

Before giving you the latest scams making the rounds; we have some do nots to share with you.
Do not respond to emails that look strange to you.
Do not download attachments from unknown senders.
Do not share your username and password to your online banking and any other online payments facilities with anyone.
Do not give out any banking or personal details on the phone to unknown callers.
Do not pay any attention to threats from automated phone recordings or from live persons with regard to your credit card or that you owe money to any revenue agency.
Do not entertain any offers either via email or by phone from senders and callers offering incredible service packages as they may pertain to cable and tv services, prizes that you have won, or any sort of any type of service package.
Do not answer the door to unknown callers.
Take extra caution to make sure that the details of your credit cards and debit cards are fully protected when you make payments at restaurants or at stores, pharmacies, and elsewhere.
Do not enter your password for Facebook or Twitter in response to a text request on your cell phone.
The same if you are asked for your Apple ID.
Do not fall prey to a text message telling you that your banking details have been compromised online.

+++++++++++++++

Scam of the month

You would do well to ignore any phone call telling you that you have won a vacation trip to an exotic vacation spot!
This phone call is usually an automated one to start with
and if you make the mistake to press 1 on your keypad you will be connected to a live agent.
There is still time for you to hang up at this point.

13 Safety Guidelines When Freezing Food
Here are 13 general food safety guidelines you’ll need to keep in mind when you’re freezing, thawing and reheating foods:
1. Always wash your hands before and after handling raw food.
2. Thaw your food in the fridge and never at room temperature. To quickly defrost your meal, put it in a water tight bag and place the bag in a bowl of water, changing the water every 30 minutes. Changing the water prohibits any bacterial growth.
3. Don’t use the microwave to thaw food. This may be a fast method of defrosting food but microwave oven power levels vary between different makes and models.
4. Always use the bottom shelf of your fridge to thaw raw meat, poultry and fish or seafood. This will prevent juices from dripping down onto other foods. If you can put the item on a plate, even better.
5. You can refreeze meat, poultry or fish after it’s been defrosted as long as it was defrosted safely.
6. Always keep raw meat, poultry and fish away from other foods.
7. Use separate cutting boards for raw meat, fish and poultry.
8. Store cooked foods in your fridge below 40 degrees F.
9. Foods that are stored in the fridge are safe for up to four days if stored below the recommended temperature. Foods containing seafood can be stored in the fridge up to two days.
10. Foods stored in the freezer are best used within two to four months, but can be stored longer. Please keep in mind that food quality will suffer greatly the longer the item is kept in the freezer.
11. All foods should be reheated to an internal temp of 165F.
12. Allow cooked foods to cool completely before putting them in the freezer.
13. Don’t put glass containers directly from the freezer into the oven.

Best time to travel

Many of us will tell you that there is really not a best time to travel; that it all depends on why you wish to travel. So here are some personal thoughts from me.

If you are looking for a good time to do a River Boat cruise, then some time in July or August or even September.
Travelling after this until the end of the year may be a bit chilly and besides, River Boat cruises do not normally go after October.
Travelling before July may also be a bit chilly.

An ocean cruise? It all depends on where you are cruising to.
For example; to the Caribbean may be best in the winter months.
The same for Hawaii.
The Meditarranean? Probably in the Spring and summer months.
To Europe? Depends on what you seek.
Think of if your travel would be governed by spring, summer, fall, or winter activities.
The same for other parts of the world.

Final thoughts?
Just remember that high season starts in December and ends at the end of march making travel rates very high. Especially so to those winter getaway places.

I’m Donna J. Jodhan enjoying my travels.

Ask Coach Donna J. Jodhan – advantages for using a carry on versus a suitcase

Ask the Coach!

August 032022

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this week:  a question from Freda in Brussels Belgium.

Freda would like to get some advantages for using a carry on versus a suitcase.

My response:

Freda, it all depends and here are my thoughts.

If you are able to use a carry on to pack your clothes then you avoid having to pack a suitcase which you would need to claim in the baggage area of the airport.

With a carry on, you take it on board with you and you walk with it upon arrival thus avoiding to go to the luggage area.

However, with a carry on, you need to make sure that your bottles and tubes meet the size requirements.

With a carry on, you need to be able to fold your clothes very small and tight in order that they fit.

A carry on may be good for short trips but I prefer a suitcase for longer ones.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

The Incomplete Picture – Some Important Things To Fill In

The incomplete picture

Forgive me if I seem to be missing something here; what’s wrong with this picture?  In July 2019 Canada passed legislation to herald in an Accessible Canada Act! Very well done but there is something missing to help complete this picture!  One of committed accessibility.

Over the years I have had the pleasure and  privilege  of engaging and interacting with the Canadian Human Rights Commission; an organization that is supposed to ensure that the complaints and concerns of Canadians are quickly and fairly dealt with. In particular, for Canadians with disabilities.  This is an organization that   has done its best to engage with Canadians with disabilities and it continues to work diligently to build trust amongst groups of persons who are considered to be the most vulnerable.

Sadly enough, the CHRC continues to struggle to process complaints and when one is told that they are still working on complaints submitted in 2020 then I rest my case.  In addition, the CHRC continues to struggle when it comes to making its online complaints system accessible and navigable to those who are blind/vision impaired and others.

This may just be the tip of the iceberg for an organization whose spirit is more than willing but its flesh is woefully weak!  It keeps attempting to walk the walk but for many reasons; some obvious and others hidden, it keeps having trouble rising from a kneeling position to a firmly walking one.

I will keep my opinion private as to some of the hidden ones but suffice it to say that some of the obvious ones could be that the CHRC needs much more financial support from the Federal Government.  It badly needs financial resources to bring its online complaints system up to snuff so that it can be made completely accessible.  It needs more Human resources to assist in processing the massive backlog of complaints filed.  Above all, it needs to adopt a more aggressive posture of dealing with those respondents who are constantly using delaying tactics to do such things as dampen the efforts of complainants and drag out their complaints to the extent that by the time a complaint gets to Tribunal it may no longer be worth the time and effort.

There is no doubt that several present and perspective respondents are aware of the above and they continue to use these glitches to their advantage.  It remains to be seen if anything concrete will change if/when the promised appointment of an accessibility commissioner is made.

For now, complainants remain at the mercy of the struggling system while respondents continue to have the upper hand.

My final thoughts?  And how do we really convince the Canadian Human Rights Commission that they need to change their ways for if they do not then nothing will change!

Just my two cents for today.

Image = Canadian Human Rights Commission logo.

Welcome to my Donna’s did you know diary for this month and pleased to share the following with you.

Here’s what I learned for this month.

  • A wee lesson in Geography

“The driest place on Earth is the Atacama Desert near the Pacific coastline of Chile. The average rainfall in these desert mountains is less than .004 inches per year. There are even some locations within the desert where no rain has fallen for more than 400 years. Yet even in this arid wasteland, there is some water. There are some salt lakes throughout the region, and in some elevations, where the temperature never exceeds freezing, snow still remains from previous storms.

  • About junk foods:

The top four most popular junk foods are: Potato chips, ice cream, candy bars, and cookies.  According to  DoSomething.Org, Americans eat 31% more prepackaged food than fresh such as fruit, raw vegetables, etc.

If you wish to know preferences by state visit the Zippia link below, where they have compiled preferences in all 50 states.

  • How to preserve your most treasured garment keep sakes?

Wrap tightly in blue tissue paper and store in a sealed bag or box.

  • Best time to try on for new shoes?

Probably in the late afternoon or early evening and why?

Because it is the time of day when your feet have expanded the most after a day’s activity.

Your feet are the smallest when you wake up in the morning.

  • And here’s another tip re your shoes:

If you are having problems when fitting your feet into your shoes, then sprinkle the insides with some baby powder or any other type of powder!

It works like a charm!

  • A home made suggestion for an after meal digestion?

Why not try enjoying some fruit?

  • Looking for ways to have your plants stay alive while on a short trip?

Here is a solution if your trip does not exceed 2 weeks.

First, place enough water in your pots as if you are watering normally.

Next wrap your plants in plastic making sure that the entire plant is covered.

When you return remove the plastic and presto!

Your plants will be healthy, wealthy, and wise!

What happened here?

The plastic helped to keep the moisture preserved in your plants!

  • A wee tip about water?

60% of our bodies is made up of water!

  • A useful tip for keeping your bill payment straight and on track:

Best to use just one credit card and in this way you only have to deal with just one payment.

10)A word on taking chargers with you when you travel:

Keep in mind that the voltage for Europe and the UK  are different from North America and parts of the Caribbean.

It is always best to consult your electronics store to ensure that you have the correct charger before you travel.

Fantastic Furniture Polish
* Use: 1/3 cup of each: boiled linseed oil, turpentine and vinegar. Mix together and shake well. Apply with a soft cloth and wipe completely dry. Wipe again with another soft cloth. Don’t try to boil your own linseed oil, it is not the same. Buy it at a hardware store or paint store.

Removing White Water Rings And Spots
* Buy a powder called Rottenstone from your hardware store. Dampen a soft cloth with cooking oil and sprinkle the powder on it. Rub the stain lightly in the direction of the grain, if the stain remains, use grade FFF pumice powder in the same manner. This is a harsher abrasive and may dull the finish. If it does, follow with the Rottenstone to restore the gloss.
* Try applying mayonnaise and rubbing it in. Let stand for an hour. Wipe with a clean soft cloth.
* Sometimes baby oil will remove rings on dark wood. Also, on marble.
* Cover each spot with a generous amount of white petroleum jelly. Allow it to remain for 24 hours, then rub into the wood. Remove the excess and polish in usual manner.
* Dampen a soft cloth with water. Squeeze it out. Put a dab of toothpaste on the cloth and buff away the white ring.

Removing Scratches
* Rub a black crayon on black furniture scratches and dark brown on mahogany pieces. Buff the marks thoroughly with a dry cloth. The wax from the crayon fills the scratch and it becomes unnoticeable. This method is preferred over iodine.
* Rub some mayonnaise on the scratch. Let it sit for a while, wipe off with a soft cloth.
* For teakwood: remove by rubbing gently with 0000 steel wool. Apply equal amounts of linseed oil and turpentine. Rub in well.
* Mahogany: to remove minor scratches, cover each scratch with a generous amount of white petroleum jelly. Allow it to remain on for 24 hours. Rub into wood. Remove excess and polish as usual.
* If the scratch is deep, remove the meat from a fresh, unsalted walnut or pecan and break it in half. Rub with the broken side. This does a terrific job of filling the scratch and restoring the color.
* Burns: rub mayonnaise into burn. Let sit a while before wiping off with a soft cloth.

10 Ways To Soften Hard Brown Sugar
1. Keep it stored in an airtight container with a slice of fresh bread placed on top. Seal and leave overnight. It should be fresh again in the morning, if not just let it sit another day or two.
2. Sprinkle a few drops of water over the chunk, seal in a plastic bag and let sit for a couple days.
3. Place in an open container, then top with a moistened cloth (paper towel works too). Let sit overnight.
4. Seal it in an airtight container with a few apple slices. This should fix it up within the next day or two. Remove apple slices once it’s fixed.
5. Use foil or plastic wrap to cover the top then set a dampened sheet of paper towel (not dripping wet) on top of the foil. Seal in an airtight container and let sit overnight or a few days as needed. Remove foil and paper towel once the towel is dry and the mass is fresh again.
6. Buy a clay disc or if you have a pottery piece on hand (from a broken clay pot, etc.), set it in water for about 30 minutes. Dry the piece so it isn’t dripping wet. Put the clay piece in a container with the sugar and seal. Check after a few days. Keep it in the container for months if you’d like, this will help prevent the problem from happening in the first place.
7. Need it now? Put it in a container and set in the microwave with a small bowl full of water beside it. Microwave for about 1 minute, check. If it’s not ready, try for another 30 seconds. You can keep doing this until it’s nice and soft, but watch that you don’t melt it.
8. Place the chunk in a baking pan and set in oven (temperature at about 250 degrees. Check after 5 minutes. If still not ready, continue checking every few minutes until it is.
9. Place the mass in a microwave safe plastic bag. Take a square of paper towel and moisten with water (not dripping wet, wring out excess). Arrange the wet paper towel in the bag with the sugar and seal. Heat in the microwave for approximately 20 seconds. If still not ready, microwave for a few seconds more, repeating until it’s ok and ready to use. Be careful it doesn’t get too hot and melt.
10. Stick small pieces in a food processor or blender and chop/pulse until usable.
For best results, make sure to keep it stored in a sealed, airtight container. A couple fresh marshmallows or a clay disc kept in the container can help prevent the problem. You can also keep it in the freezer and set it out a few hours before using.

River boat versus ocean

I have always wanted to take a river boat cruise and now seems to be the right time for me.

I have been on several ocean cruises including ones to the Bahamas and to Hawaii and now I am preparing to take a river boat cruise to the Danube.
In my next post I’ll tell you how it went.

For now, I share the following with you.
Boats or ships on an ocean cruise are usually much larger than those on a river boat cruise.
The number of passengers on a river boat cruise are much less than those on an ocean cruise.
I was quite impressed with the layout of the cabins on an ocean cruise and now I look forward to seeing what it is going to be like on my river boat cruise.
The choice of cabins are more for an ocean cruise than for a river boat cruise.
I am told that there are only two choices for a river boat cruise.

I cannot wait to go cruising down the Danube. My friend Jilla and I will share a cabin. We’ll start out in Nuremberg Germany and finish up in Budapest Hungary.

It is going to be a lot of fun with lots for me to experience. I’ll fly to England to meet Jilla and we’ll fly from there to Nuremberg.
Stay tuned for my next post.

I’m Donna J. Jodhan enjoying my travels.

A review of the Life Labs facility at Duncan Mills RD

A review of the Life Labs facility at Duncan Mills RD
By Donna Jodhan
Award winning advocate and sight loss coach

Introduction:
I have been visiting this lab for several years now to carry out my blood tests but ever since the Covid virus descended upon us in 2020, I have had to find other alternatives.
On the whole I have been quite satisfied and it is my hope that this lab will continue to operate now that Covid restrictions have been greatly lifted.

So how would I rate their services? With 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest, here are my ratings.
Service desk assistance – 4
Assistance for patientswith special needs – 4
Assistance at lab – 4

Remarks :
Access to the lab was extremely user friendly for a vision impaired person and navigating around the office was not very difficult.

About lab staff:
On the whole, they are friendly but could be a wee bit more helpful.

Any suggestions?
Maybe staff can become a bit more engaging and communicative when speaking in English. For after all; English is the first language being used in Toronto.
