Once Again We Have Been Forgotten – Time To Speak Up

Once again we have been forgotten.

And should I be surprised?  Absolutely not!  And how can we stop some of these unpleasant surprises from happening?  I am still scratching my head!

Today it is all about the City of Toronto falling down on the job.  They recently instituted a vacant property tax whereby they are asking home owners to submit an online form to state whether or not they have occupied their homes for the last six months.

All well and good but for those of us who have difficulty submitting these so-called simple forms; it is an insult and it is very disrespectful when you are told by agents at the 311 phone line that you can find someone to submit it for you!

Here’s what happened to me.

I spent over two hours waiting on the 311 phone line to speak to an agent and when I did get through to a live agent I told them that I needed help as a vision impaired person to submit my form.

They told me that I could get someone to do it for me and when I told them that this was unacceptable, rude, disrespectful, and an infringement against my rights for equality and privacy, they took down my complaint, gave me a ticket number, and sent me on to another department.

I waited on the phone for another hour before I had to hang up and then I again phoned after working hours.

The agent told me that the info being requested was not confidential so it was perfectly okay for me to seek someone’s help to submit my form.

Out of pure frustration I ended up asking a close friend to help me and I also registered my objections with my Counsellor’s office; Nick Mantas of Ward 22.

This is unacceptable, it is rude, it is disrespectful, and I am demanding that the City of Toronto take steps to fix this glaring glitch!

It does not matter whether or not the info being requested is confidential; everyone has the right to complete this form in privacy.

So please City of Toronto!  Please do something about this now!

Note:  I am happy to report that thanks to my Counsellor’s office I was contacted by the City of Toronto and hopefully we can work to right a wrong.

My final thoughts?

Unfortunately this is a very common lack of consideration and forgetfulness across the entire landscape!

We can only solve this by speaking up!

Just my two cents for today.

A review of the colonoscopy clinic at Fairview Mall drive
By Donna Jodhan
Award winning advocate and sight loss coach

Introduction:
No one really enjoys visiting any sort of colonoscopy clinic but I thought I would just provide some comments on this particular clinic.
It is clean, friendly, and very welcoming and comforting.

So how would I rate their services? With 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest, here are my ratings.
Service desk assistance – 5
Assistance for patients with special needs – 5
Assistance at clinic – 5

Remarks :
Access to the clinic was extremely user friendly for a vision impaired person and navigating around the clinic was not very difficult.

About clinic staff:
Very friendly and helpful and they go out of their way to make you feel comfortable.

My medical treatment?
Very professional.

Any suggestions?
Keep up the great work.

Ask coach Donna J. Jodhan – how to clean wet paint from one’s clothes

Ask the Coach!

September 21 2023

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this week:  a question from Pedro in Miami Florida.

Pedro is looking for ways to clean wet paint from his clothes.

My response:

Pedro, I find that one needs to be very careful when dealing with cleaning wet paint from one’s clothes.

The first thing to remember is that you should not rub too vigorously when cleaning.

Next, I think that it is best and safest to visit your hardware store and ask for their advice.

For if you use a detergent that is not suitable you can only make the stain worst and almost impossible to remove.

Here, I would prefer not to suggest any possible stain removers.

Because it all depends on the type of paint that has stained your clothes.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

To contact me with a question or a thought; please send an email to me at donnajodhan@gmail.com and I’ll be sure to respond in 5 business days at the most.

If you wish me to respond earlier then put the word important in your subject line and I’ll do my best to respond more quickly.

Until the next time then!

I’m Donna wishing you a pleasant day and thanking everyone for their insightful feedback and suggestions!

How Serious Are We When It Comes To Accessibility? Time To Put Up Or Shut Up!

Yes!  In July 2019 Canada passed its Accessible Canada Act; a very long overdue piece of legislation that allowed it to promote itself as one of the developed countries that has passed accessibility legislation.  However, for whereas this was a history making piece of legislation it on the other hand was very sad that it took long so very long for Canada to do this.  But as they often say; better late than never!

I respectfully submit that indeed; the passage of the Accessible Canada Act for a Barrier Free Canada is definitely a landmark piece of legislation but like everything else; this can only be a landmark piece of legislation if all stakeholders comply.  Of course, we are always going to continue to strenuously advocate for things such as stricter penalties for those not complying and for shorter time periods for various pieces of the legislation to be implemented and here is where I honestly believe that we will be able to judge with respect to how serious are we when it comes to accessibility.

Of course, there are other requirements to be factored in and considerations to be implemented.  We need to remember that accessibility is not a nice to have.  It is a must and is so because of growing needs from a rapidly aging population.  It should be much more than just a duty to accommodate.  It is my sincere hope that the Canadian Government and especially the ministered responsible for matters of accessibility will increase the pressure for stakeholders to fall in line sooner than later.

My final thoughts?

We need to get out of the bad habit of just being content to talk the walk and to replace this with walk the talk.

Too many of us are just content to sit back and wait for something to happen!

Well!  It is not going to happen for as long as we allow entities to get away with a lack of accountability and transparency!

Just my two cents for today.

Image = Illustration. Three celebratory banners with alternating rows of red and white drop downs showcasing maple leaves overlap across the top. In the bottom right corner are three Canadian flags waving in the wind. In the bottom left corner is the Barrier Free Canada / Sans Barriere Canada logo. Below the BFC / CSB logo are the words ‘Bill C-81 The Accessible Canada Act’. Confetti of all different colors rains down from above.

3) Six Ages 2: Lights Going Out (iOS/iPadOS, US$9.99)
Life after myths. Death, disaster, despair.
This new installment in the Six Ages series is a stand-alone survival-storybook combining interactive fiction and turn-based strategy. The world is ending, and your small clan’s survival depends on how you manage its relationship with the remaining gods and their followers.
Whether you’re dealing with angry ghosts, clan policy, enemy gods, or squabbling advisors, there’s rarely one “right” or “wrong” answer, because the deep simulation makes your particular situation unique. Your choices have socio-economic impact, and some consequences might not be obvious for decades, and could affect future generations of a character’s bloodline.
Your clan struggles to survive in the world of Glorantha, the setting of games such as RuneQuest and King of Dragon Pass. This bronze age world is facing an existential crisis. Ten generations after the events of Ride Like the Wind, some gods have already perished and humanity itself seems to be on the brink of annihilation. Here, the laws of physics themselves are subordinate to the whims of the gods and spirits.
In Lights Going Out, you can continue a game you began in Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind, or start a new story in this Great Darkness.
Six Ages 2: Lights Going Out is immensely replayable, thanks to over 600 interactive scenes with multiple, system-driven outcomes. Short episodes and automatic saving mean you can play even when you only have a minute or two. The built-in saga writes down the story for you. And advisors with distinctive personalities help you track your promises (and your cows).
Miracles have always required sacrifice. Now, your people need them more than ever, but the costs are higher, too. Is it worth aiding the destructive gods of Chaos to ensure your own survival?
The game is completely accessible via VoiceOver.
Current Version: 1.0.2 (August 26, 2023)

Ask Coach Donna J. Jodhan – how to deal with wet floors

Ask the Coach!

September 14 2023

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this week:  a question from Jane in Boston Massachusetts.

Jane is looking for ways to deal with wet floors.

My response:

Jane, first things first.

I make sure that I know that the floors are wet.

Either through those yellow warning signs that are usually placed to warn of wet floors.

Or if there are no signs then this is more difficult especially so if you are unable to see the wet floor.

Then I proceed by either avoiding these wet floors if I can

Or to start stepping gingerly across the floor.

If I am wearing shoes with heels then I think that it is best to avoid wet floors all together.

But if I am wearing shoes with rubber soles then I use the walk slowly using baby steps to walk.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

Is This The Forbidden Fruit? – It Is Time To Hold Apple More Accountable And Transparent!

Forgive me if this sounds a bit melo dramatic but I am really not sure how to describe this particular circumstance.  I’ll leave it up to your opinion.  Some of you may indeed tell me that this is a bit melo dramatic and then there are others who may just agree with me.

In August 2020, I wrote and successfully passed my Apple Certified Support Professional Exam and at that time I honestly believed that this could be a stepping stone to my being able to find opportunities to work for this prestigious company For after all!  There are those of us who aspire to work for companies such as Apple because of its so-called reputation as a leader in accessibility and inclusivity.  I worked overtime to obtain this certification.  I had to learn how to use voiceover, learn the Mac operating system, and then study for the actual exam itself.  I was humbled to have been able to obtain this highly touted certification but alas!  Since then I have spent endless hours doing my best to convince certain folks within the accessibility division of Apple that I was worthy of at least an informational interview with someone up the line.

Sure!  I was put in touch with 2 specific individuals but I humbly and respectfully submit that these 2 persons have been unable to help me get very far.  I have received several reasons/excuses as to why it would be difficult to find ways to open doors of opportunity to work with Apple as a consultant.  I have been told that in order to join the Apple Consulting network I would need to fork out a million dollars for insurance purposes.  I have made several suggestions that could have been tried but alas!  They have all been rebuffed.

For example: To work with developers to make their apps more accessible and inclusive.

To promote encouraging third parties to make accessibility and inclusivity a part of their tool kit.

To work with Apple consultants to promote accessibility and inclusivity.

To work with Apple to make their exams more accessible plus more.

To work with retail stores to promote accessibility and inclusivity.

To encourage them to find ways to reach out to companies serving customers with disabilities

And to reach out to customers with disabilities.

The disappointing thing here is that when I and my coach were featured in a podcast to promote our services as accessibility consultants, we did not receive a single inquiry from anyone.

So what’s wrong here?  Why should I be disappointed?  Why should I be surprised?

Maybe none of the above!  I naively thought that Apple would be different but sadly enough no!  I honestly felt that with my credentials as a hardworking and high profile Canadian advocate along with my acquired Apple certification I could somehow have been able to at least bore a tiny hole in the web of Apple’s hiring process.

I have come away entirely empty handed.  For after almost 3 years of engagement, I have nothing to show for my efforts.  I am tuckered out, tired, disappointed, and disillusioned!  For whereas I had originally hoped that Apple was a cut above other technology companies; they are sadly not!  They are probably no different when it comes to walking the walk.  They are very good at talking the walk but that’s it.  I can only urge them to keep in mind that when it comes to accessibility and inclusivity, we are the ones with our lived experiences and unique expertise who are in the best position to be of service.  We are authentic and ready to help.

Please; and this is not just for Apple but for others as well; we really need for you to take a long hard look at how you view accessibility and inclusivity.

This is not a nice to have or just an add on for publicity purposes!  This is fast becoming a must because at the end of the day consumers such as seniors and persons with disabilities are going to be your bread and butter consumers.  I respectfully submit that you need to keep this in mind and a rapidly aging population will only intensify this trend.

My final thoughts?  I can sit back and give in to Apple’s unhealthy actions or I can work to encourage others to work to convince Apple that their policies and strategies need to be changed from those of protectionism to those of better engagement and affirmative communication.

Just my two cents for today.

When are the cheaper rates available?

I think that most of the traveling public are constantly searching for cheaper traveling rates and why not?
The cheaper the rate then maybe the better but we need to ensure that we get what we pay for while at the same time that our expectations are fully met.

So here is the deal: If we pay a cheaper rate then be assured that some of the perks may not be included and on the other hand if we pay top price then we should expect perks to be included.
The important thing to remember is that we need to spend some extra time seeking out the perks.

When is the best time to find those cheaper rates or bargain rates?
This would include such things as air fares, hotel rates, and cruiseline fares.
Normally from end of March to the beginning of April and lasting until just before mid December.
This is known as low season and high season would normally last from mid December to end of March.

These are just general guidelines but the best thing to do is to keep on checking those travel websites.

Ask Coach Donna J. Jodhan – how to keep earbuds untangled

Ask the Coach!

September 07 2023

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this week:  a question from  Gabriel in Denver Colorado.

Gabriel is looking for ways to keep his earbuds untangled.

My response:

Gabriel I think that I have a nice and easy solution for you.

I accidently discovered this technique recently but I am sure that there are other ways.

Here goes.

I first untangle them the hard way.

Next I place them over the back of a chair that I am not using.

I make sure that they are evenly placed.

That is, that half of the earbuds are hanging over the back and that the other half is sitting firmly on the inner surface of the back.

If there is a bar on the back of the chair, then I loop the earbuds through the bar.

That is, between the bar and the top of the back.

I hope that this helps.

By The Numbers – Companies Still Not Considering The Real Consumer Markets

For better or for worse, this is what continues to take place when companies prioritize on which initiatives they are going to pursue.  I call this the by the numbers strategy and for whereas it works when determining such variables as customer bases and bottom lines, it sadly does not work in favour of the needs and requirements of consumers and customers with disabilities.

Here are some factors that appear to influence the above.

Markets containing consumers and customers with disabilities are too small.

Companies continue to believe that it costs too much to implement services and products for consumers and customers.

Companies believe that developing accessible websites will cost too much and will also be time consuming.

It seems to cost too much to develop products and services for consumers and customers with disabilities.

It appears to be too costly for companies to develop and manufacture hardware and software for consumers and customers with disabilities.

I could go on and on but I believe that this is a fair picture of what is presently taking place and unless we take steps to address the above then it will continue to persist.

My final thought? Somehow, we need to change the attitudes here!  This is not healthy and extremely callous and inhumane!

Profits are not the only thing that should matter!

Just my two cents for today.
