Ask sight loss coach Donna J. Jodhan – Coping mechanisms for dealing with noisy places

Ask the Coach!

October 16 2023

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this week:  a question from Carey in Montreal Canada.

Carey would like to know if there are any coping mechanisms for dealing with noisy places.

My response:

Cary, at the best of times I find noisy places to be a great challenge.  I am really not sure if there are any tried and proven tips but I am sure that someone out there can provide some suggestions.

For me, I do my best to ensure that I can hear what is going on around me and what is been spoken to me.  If I wear ear protectors it only filters out the noise but I am still faced with being able to know what is going on around me.  I can only do my best to avoid noisy areas.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

To contact me with a question or a thought; please send an email to me at donnajodhan@gmail.com and I’ll be sure to respond in 5 business days at the most.

If you wish me to respond earlier then put the word important in your subject line and I’ll do my best to respond more quickly.

Until the next time then!

I’m Donna wishing you a pleasant day and thanking everyone for their insightful feedback and suggestions!

How Real Is Customer Service? – Time To Act!

How real is customer service?

I continue to try and figure this one out and I am still trying to do so!

I just think that customer service as we knew it before the pandemic struck is not the same.

Do I blame this on the pandemic?  Not very sure!  So much has changed including customer service.  Communications has definitely changed; written and spoken.  Consumers and customers are probably expecting more and at the same time agents and reps are really struggling to keep up with demand, technology, and so much more.

There appears to be a crunch when it comes to all of this and I for one am not too sure how we can find our way out of this.

Whatever it is, there needs to be more teamwork between companies, customer reps and agents, and customers and consumers.  I do not think that the growing message that we need to go online is the answer.  Yes; technology continues to dictate that we spend more of our lives online but let us not forget that there are millions of consumers who are unable to do so.  Who are they?  They are our seniors, persons with disabilities, and those that did not grow up with technology.  They are the millions without immediate access to the Internet, and those without computers and I devices.

So to my original question; how real is customer service?  These days, I struggle to give an appropriate response.

My final thoughts?? We need to concentrate more on team building!  Less complaining and more solving!

Just my two cents for today.

Scams of the month:
Before giving you our scam tips of the month, here are some very valueable tips.
You need to remember that scams come in the following formats:
As emails, as phone calls both recorded and via a live caller, and o yes! It can even show up at your door and in your mailbox.
And now they are targeting us through texts being sent to our cell phones.

Before giving you the latest scams making the rounds; we have some do nots to share with you.
Do not respond to emails that look strange to you.
Do not download attachments from unknown senders.
Do not share your username and password to your online banking and any other online payments facilities with anyone.
Do not give out any banking or personal details on the phone to unknown callers.
Do not pay any attention to threats from automated phone recordings or from live persons with regard to your credit card or that you owe money to any revenue agency.
Do not entertain any offers either via email or by phone from senders and callers offering incredible service packages as they may pertain to cable and tv services, prizes that you have won, or any sort of any type of service package.
Do not answer the door to unknown callers.
Take extra caution to make sure that the details of your credit cards and debit cards are fully protected when you make payments at restaurants or at stores, pharmacies, and elsewhere.
Do not enter your password for Facebook or Twitter in response to a text request on your cell phone.
The same if you are asked for your Apple ID.
Do not fall prey to a text message telling you that your banking details have been compromised online.

+++++++++++++++

Scam of the month!
Be on the look out for the continuing so-called grandma scam.
This has been around for several years now.
Scammers use this to try and get money out of the ones they call.
They pretend to be a grandson who needs their grandma to help them get out of a tight spot!

1) Best Of Helpful Hints: The Best Of Hints For Hanging Pictures
Cockeyed Pictures
* Wind some adhesive tape around the center of the picture wire. The wire will be less likely to slip on the hanger.
* Place masking tape on the back four corners of the picture and press against your wall.
* Hang pictures first facing the wall. Then turn over, crossing the wires. This prevents slipping in any direction.
* Wrap masking tape (sticky side out) around the middle of a rounded toothpick and place a few near the bottom of the back of the frame. There will be no damage to the wall and your pictures will always hang straight.

2) Best Of Helpful Hints: The Best Of Hints For Hanging Pictures

Preventing Experimental Holes
* Cut a paper pattern of each picture or mirror that you plan to hang and pin to the wall. After you have found the correct positions for the hangers, perforate the paper with a sharp pencil to mark the wall.
* A wet fingerprint shows the exact spot for the hanger. The print dries without a mark.
* If you like to change pictures often, think of covering your walls with grass cloth. Nail marks will never show.

Articles of the day

25 Vintage Cooking Tips
1. A little oatmeal adds much flavor and richness when used as a thickener for soups. Try it.
2. Believe it or not, a boiled egg should never be boiled. Simmering produces tastier, better results. The same is also true of “hard-boiled” eggs.
3. Cheese soufflé will stay up high, light, handsome, if you use quick-cooking tapioca instead of flour to thicken the milk base. Take 3 tablespoons tapioca to 1 cup milk for a 3-egg soufflé.
4. Add 1/4 teaspoon baking soda to cranberries while cooking them and they will not require much sugar.
5. Don’t add sugar to sweeten peas. It’s much cheaper, and tastier, to cook peas with a few empty green pods.
6. To prevent the smell of cooking greens, add a lump or so of loaf sugar to the water, or put a piece of dry toast in a clean muslin bag and boil it with the greens.
Another method is to add a teaspoonful of vinegar to the water when it is
boiling.
7. Lemon juice or vinegar in the water cauliflower is cooked in makes it keep its snowy-white color.
8. To preserve the color of green vegetables, put them on to cook in boiling water with a pinch of baking soda, or keep the cover off the kettle while boiling them.
9. If a vegetable or cereal burns, plunge the vessel containing the burned mass into cold water and allow it to remain for a few minutes before pouring the contents into another pan. This will do away almost entirely with the burned taste which is so disagreeable.
10. Salt beef is improved in flavor if a few small onions and a dessertspoonful of brown sugar are added while cooking.
11. Vegetables that are to be cooked by steaming will preserve their color in the process if, after being washed in the usual way, they are given a final rinse in boiling water containing a little baking soda.
12. To prevent the odor of boiling ham or cabbage permeating the house, add a little vinegar to the water in which they are boiled.
13. When frying fish, use clarified dripping or salad oil. Lard smells, and butter fries a bad color.
14. A teaspoonful of vinegar added to the water in which eggs are poached keeps the whites from spreading and makes the whites cook over the yolk.
15. To prevent milk or cream from curdling when used in combination with tomato, add a bit of baking soda to each before they are mixed.
16. Sausages will shrink less and not break at all if they’re boiled about 8 minutes before they’re fried, or rolled lightly in flour.
17. Wash leafy vegetables, such as spinach, thoroughly just before cooking. Add no water-the water that clings to the leaves is enough to cook them in.
18. To keep cauliflower snowy white, soak for half an hour in cold salt water before cooking it.
19. Lessen the odor of cooking turnips by adding a teaspoonful of sugar to the water. They’ll be more flavorful, too.
20. When slicing potatoes, hold the paring knife over a gas flame or in boiling water and the potatoes will slice easily.
21. Root vegetables, such as carrots, turnips, etc., should be freed from all dirt and grit; those of the green variety should be allowed to soak for a few minutes in cold water to which a generous pinch of salt has been added.
22. You won’t waste flour if you dust it from a large saltshaker onto meats, fish,or patties, instead of dipping the food into the flour. It’s easier, too.
23. Retain flavor and vitamins and save waste by boiling carrots in their skins. Instead of peeling, mash them with salt and pepper.
24. Keep sweet potatoes from looking dried out by greasing the skins with any cooking fat or oil before baking them.
25. Why waste celery tops? Cut them up and use to flavor meats, stews, soups, roasts, stuffing’s.

Ask sight loss coach Donna J. Jodhan – how to organize your prescription pills

Ask the Coach!

October 09 2023

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this week:  a question from Doris in London England.

Doris is looking for ways to organize her prescription pills.

My response:

Doris, there are several ways for you to do this and here are a few tips to get you started.

First, you can use braille labels to notate your bottles.

Second, you could also use large print labels.

Third, there is a device called script talk that can also help you to organize your prescriptions and I recently acquired one of these.

Of course, I am sure that others could chime in with other suggestions.

I hope this helps.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Who Are The Usurpers? It’s Time To Speak Up

Who are the usurpers?

In my respectful opinion, they are the individuals and companies who loudly proclaim to be knowledgeable and expert in the field of accessibility and inclusivity but truth be told knowledge and expertise are sadly missing in their arsenals.

They are the individuals who go around promoting themselves as such but in fact they continue to fail to take advantage of the real experts of accessibility and we are the ones who are the true experts.

They are the companies who continue to fool all levels of governments with their inaccurate info that they possess the knowledge and experience when in truth they do not possess very much in this field.

We have individuals who continue to be considered as very high profile experts and there is no doubt that they have obtained knowledge and experience but truth be told they are sadly lacking in lived experience.  The same for those usurping companies.

How can we address and fix this blatant wrong?  I am not really sure!  Maybe we can start to speak up and speak up more strongly.  Maybe we can start to promote the lived expertise factor and to start appealing to the better sides of these folks.

My final thoughts?  If we do not speak up and speak out this madness will only continue!  It is not acceptable and it is downright insulting and condescending!

Just my two cents for today.
