Welcome to my Donna’s did you know diary for April and pleased to share the following with you.

Here’s what I learned for this month.

  • About keeping your passport up to date!

When you travel overseas, make very sure that your passport is valid for at least the next six months.

For if it is not, then you run the risk of being refused the ability to travel.

  • When staying at a hotel:

If you wish to have room service clean your room then here are some useful tips.

First, put the sign outside your door with the card showing that you require cleaning services.

Next, if you wish to have clean fresh towels placed in your bathroom,

Then take your old dirty towels and place them on the floor of your bathroom.

  • Okay and here is a tip on how colds start!

They begin in your nose believe it or not and from there they travel along your body to other parts.

  • About caring for orchids?

They should be placed in a sunny spot in your home.

The window sill is a great place for them.

Water them once weekly and you can use ice cubes to do the trick.

About 3 ice cubes per week.

Do not over water them.

  • Warming food in your microwave versus your toaster oven!

In the microwave, food tends to soften.

In your toaster oven, they tend to get hard.

  • What exactly is a de-influencer?

Well here is what I learned!

A de-influencer is the opposite of an influencer.

For whereas an influencer influences by encouraging us to do something, a de-influencer encourages us not to do something.

  • If you need to ensure that yours is a true self test for covid!

Please ensure that you insert the probe provided in your kit far enough up each nostril.

For if you do not; then your covid test will not be authentic.

  • And here are some benefits to eating pears!

They contain vitamin C

And they are filled with fibre.

  • What’s this about when is the best time to take a vaccination?

Well, make sure that you are not sleep deprived.

At least six hours of sleep.

Do not take a vaccination after coming off a night shift.

  • If you are looking for a laptop with a CD rom?

They are becoming more and more difficult to find!

You’ll now need to use an external CD rom drive.

Why is this?

Because manufacturers are building laptops with more usb ports and sd card ports.

The good old desktop computer still comes with a CD rom drive.

4) Best Of Helpful Hints: The Kitchen

Keeping Food Fresh

Lettuce And Celery

* Lettuce and celery will keep longer if you store them in the refrigerator in paper bags instead of cellophane ones. Do not remove the outisde leaves of either until ready to use.

* Lettuce won’t rust as quickly if you place a paper towel or napkin in the storage container.

* Line the bottom of the vegetable compartments with paper toweling. This absorbs the excess moisture and keeps all fruits and vegetables fresher for a longer period of time.

A Review of the Crowne Plaza Hotel Gatineau

A view of the front of the hotel at night, with the windows all lit up.

A Review of the Crowne Plaza Hotel Gatineau
by Donna J. Jodhan
Award winning advocate and sight loss coach

Introduction:
This is probably one of my most favourite hotels. Friendly, comfortable, and staff that knows how to serve you!
Located in Ottawa and in a very central location, this warm and welcoming hotel has everything that you need in order to make your stay an unforgettable one.

And with Covid restrictions much relaxed, this would be the perfect hotel to explore for the spring.

So how would I rate their services? With 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest, here are my ratings.
Service desk assistance – 5
Assistance for guests with special needs – 5
Assistance at restaurant – 5

Remarks :
Access to the restaurant was extremely user friendly for a vision impaired person and navigating among the tables was not very difficult.

About hotel staff:
They are well trained, very friendly, and go beyond the call of duty.

My meals:
An excellent blend of French and English cuisine.

Any suggestions?
Just keep on going!

Coach Donna J. Jodhan shows you how to keep tea leaves out of your tea when pouring tea into your cup and to keep bits of spices out of your soups sauces and stews

Ask the Coach!

April 17 2023

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this week:  a question from Mary-Anne in Saint Lewis Missouri.

Mary-Anne is looking for a way to keep tea leaves out of her tea when pouring the liquid into her mug and to avoid having spices fall into her stews, soups, and sauces.

My response:

Mary-Anne, I’d like to recommend one of those mesh tea balls to you.

It is safe to use, fits snuggly over the top of the mug and does the trick.

Some of these mesh tea balls even release flavour and aroma.

I even use this wonderful ball when making stews, soups, and sauces and when I need to avoid having my spices fall into the pot or bowl

Give it a try!

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

To contact me with a question or a thought; please send an email to me at donnajodhan@gmail.com and I’ll be sure to respond in 5 business days at the most.

If you wish me to respond earlier then put the word important in your subject line and I’ll do my best to respond more quickly.

Until the next time then!

I’m Donna wishing you a pleasant day and thanking everyone for their insightful feedback and suggestions!

Coach Donna J. Jodhan shows you how to test for boiling water

Ask the Coach!

April 03 2023

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this week:  a question from Marco in Warsaw Poland.

Marco is looking for a safe way to test for boiling water.

My response:

Marco, I may have something for you to try if you are able to purchase from your country.

This little round device is called the boil alert pot watcher.

Here is a description.

“The Boil Alert is a 3 1/2″” heat-resistant glass disk designed to be put in a pot while heating liquids.

When the liquid starts to boil the Boil Alert begins to rattle against the bottom, thus alerting the user to turn off the heat.

I bought this nifty little device to help me know when my liquids are boiled and I have not regretted it.

I bought it at the www.blindmicemegamall.com website.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

Coach Donna J. Jodhan shows you how to find ways to chop veggies, fruits, and meat safely without damaging your counter or knives.

Ask the Coach!

April 10 2023

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this week:  a question from Levy in Jerusalem Israel.

Levy would like to find ways to chop veggies, fruits, and meat safely without damaging his counter or knives.

My response:

Levy, I use a Flexible Plastic Chopping Mat when chopping any of the above.

I can transfer chopped items very quickly without spilling

This mat is plastic and non-absorbant.

This mat protects my counter top and prevents my knives from dulling.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

10 Healthy Substitutes For Mayonnaise
Americans like mayo. A lot. The U.S. now consumes some $2 billion worth of mayonnaise each year, according to research firm Euromonitor, which means it’s surpassed ketchup as the number 1 most-used condiment. “The average person uses a lot, not a little,” says registered dietitian Keri Gans, author of The Small Change Diet and an Eat + Run blogger. Health-wise, that can be problematic for a number of reasons. If you’re ready to move on from the mayo, consider one of these healthier swaps.
But first: What’s wrong with mayo? The white stuff is loaded with fat, calories and salt. One tablespoon provides roughly 94 calories; 10 grams of fat; and no protein, fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron or calcium. “It’s high in calories without much in the way of nutrition except for fat,” says registered dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner, author of The Flexitarian Diet.
“You can do better”.
1. Low-Fat Plain Greek Yogurt
Greek yogurt is a nutrition superstar — and a versatile one at that. One tablespoon provides roughly 8 calories and 1.5 grams of protein and calcium. Try mixing some into your favorite salad, be it tuna, egg, chicken or potato, Gans suggests. Or slather it onto your sandwiches.
2. Olive Oil
This Mediterranean diet staple is touted for its heart-healthy benefits, it’s packed with monounsaturated fatty acids, which are the good fats. Gans suggests using it in cole slaw, pasta salad, potato salad or any other salad dish that typically calls for mayo. A word of warning, though: “Calories can add up here, so user beware,” Gans says.
3. Hummus
The popular Mediterranean spread is made from pureed chickpeas, olive oil, tahini, garlic and lemon juice. It provides just a quarter of the calories mayonnaise does, Jackson Blatner says, along with more protein and fiber. One tablespoon packs 25 calories, 1 gram of fiber and 1 gram of protein. Try spreading some on your turkey sandwich or mixing it into your egg salad.
4, Mustard
At just 10 calories per tablespoon, it’s “very low calorie, with no fat and lots of flavor and varieties,” Jackson Blatner says. Keep in mind that honey mustard contains twice as many calories as yellow or brown mustard. And regardless of which type you choose, pay attention to sodium content, especially if you’re on a salt-restricted diet.
5. Low-Fat Cottage Cheese
It’s salty, light and creamy, which makes it similar to mayo, but healthier. One tablespoon provides 18 calories, no cholesterol and 2.5 grams of protein. Stir some into your tuna salad, or mix some with red peppers, lemon juice and fresh herbs for a healthy dip.
6. Mashed Avocado
As Gans says: “Who needs mayonnaise on a sandwich when you can spread a creamy avocado? It’s the perfect swap.” And it provides just a quarter of the calories mayo does, along with an impressive dose of healthy monounsaturated fat, more fiber and important vitamins such as C and folate. For an extra kick, drizzle some olive oil over the avocado. Or slather guacamole on your sandwiches instead.
7. Pesto
It’s made from basil and olive oil, and it’s rich in important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. One tablespoon typically provides 45 calories, along with decent doses of vitamins A and C, calcium and iron. Pesto works on sandwiches and in salads.
8. Almond Butter
True, a tablespoon serving has roughly the same amount of calories as mayonnaise. But it’s packed with more protein (3 to 4 grams), fiber (1.5 grams) and vitamin E.
9. Nayonaise
Meet the vegan alternative to mayonnaise. It’s made from soy and has about half the calories and fat as the standard stuff. Nayonaise is also packed full of vitamin B13 and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Swirl some into your chicken salad, potato salad or onto your sandwiches.
10. Mediterranean-Inspired Spreads
Jackson Blatner’s favorites include tzatziki (yogurt and cucumber), baba ghanoush (roasted eggplant) and olive tapenade (chopped olives). Baba ghanoush, for example, is packed with fiber, protein and omega-3 fatty acids, as well as calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium and zinc.

Working to ensure a smooth trip

For me, it is so very important that I do all that I can to ensure that my trip goes smoothly. I am probably not the only one and it does not matter whether or not one is sighted.

No, and here are my tips for what it is worth.
Book well in advance.
Print off your ticket information and hotel vouchers well in advance.
Create a document that contains email addresses and phone numbers for your friends and this should contain information such as:
Flight info or train info, hotel info, number of days that you will be away, where you may be staying other than a hotel if applicable, and any medical info for insurances that you may be taking out. Such as travel insurance or medical insurance.

Also include emergency numbers that can be called if necessary; family and friends.
I deem all of this to be very important.

I’m Donna J. Jodhan enjoying my travels.
