Ask the Scam Watcher – November 2024

The Top 3 Scams to Watch Out for in November

Scams can vary by month and region, but as of recent trends, three scams that tend to be particularly prevalent in November include:

  1. Holiday Shopping Scams: With the holiday season approaching, scammers ramp up efforts to exploit consumers. This includes fake online stores, phishing emails pretending to be from legitimate retailers, and fraudulent offers on social media. Scammers may use tactics such as creating fake deals or selling non-existent products.
  2. Tax Scams: Some scammers start targeting individuals with tax-related schemes as the end of the year approaches. These can include fake IRS calls or emails threatening legal action if immediate payment is not made, or phishing attempts to steal personal information under the guise of tax updates.
  3. Charity Scams: During the holiday season, there’s an increase in charitable giving. Scammers often exploit this by posing as charitable organizations to solicit donations. These scams can take the form of fraudulent phone calls, emails, or websites that appear to be associated with legitimate charities.

It’s always a good idea to be cautious, verify sources, and use secure payment methods to protect yourself from scams.

Important tips from the travel table

From the pages of Donna’s diary
What makes for an accessible airline?

Based on my long years of travel both domestic and international and having had to engage and communicate with airlines before I travel, I proffer the following tips and suggestions.

* It all starts with the booking process and online booking systems must be accessible.
That is, to ensure that the booking system is easy to navigate and use and that it can be navigated independently.
* That there are contact telephone numbers for one to call if they run into difficulty and that the telephone customer reps can help to complete bookings.
* to ensure that airline websites are fully accessible, navigable, and usable.
* that airport services are provided by agents from curb side to boarding.
* that there is adequate assistance provided at check in.
* That all agents are properly trained to engage and communicate with travelers with a disability or special need.
* Remember, one size does not fit all!
* In flight services are built to accomodate the needs and requests of travelers with a disability.
* Requests such as assistance with meals, visiting the washroom, and transfer services from mobility aid to seat for those requiring them.

I hope that this is a good start.

I’m Donna J. Jodhan enjoying my travels.

Catch Up with Sight-Loss Coach Donna J. Jodhan – How to Clean Chandeliers, Barbecue Grills, Fire Places

An image of a magnifying glass highlighting the words 'Helpful Tips'. Behind the magnifying glass is a word cloud of related terms in rainbow colours.

Catching Up with the Coach! – October 2024

To contact me with your ideas, email me at donnajodhan@gmail.com

8) Best Of Helpful Hints: The Best Of Hints For Cleaning The Miscellaneous

Chandeliers

* Here is a method of cleaning crystal chandeliers that does not require disassembling the fixture. The area underneath the chandelier should be protected by a dropcloth. Fill a water tumbler with one part alcohol and three parts water. Raise the tumbler to each pendant until it is immersed. The crystal will drip dry without leaving water spots, lint or finger marks. The crystal parts not accessible to the tumbler can be wiped with the solution.

* Wear cotton work gloves and dip your gloved fingers in ammonia water and clean away.

_____

9) Best Of Helpful Hints: The Best Of Hints For Cleaning The Miscellaneous

Barbecue Grill

* When coals have nearly reached their hottest point, tear off a sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil large enough to completely cover your grill. Press foil shiny side down on grill and fold sides under, covering as tightly as possible. Place grill over coals for 10 minutes. Remove foil and any charred grease or food on your grill will drop off leaving your grill clean and shiny.

_____

10) Best Of Helpful Hints: The Best Of Hints For Cleaning The Miscellaneous

Fireplaces

* There is no need to scrub the fireplace if you throw salt on the logs occasionally. This will reduce the soot by two-thirds.

* Vinegar will clean brick tiling around the fireplace. Dip a vegetable brush in white vinegar and scrub quickly. Immediately sponge to absorb the moisture.

* Rub smoked areas with an artgum eraser. This works especially well on porous, rock front fireplaces.

* For smooth stone or brick fireplaces, wash with a strong solution of trisodium phosphate (1/2 cup to 1 gallon of water). Apply with sponge. Use the solution only after all smoke possible has been erased by an artgum eraser.

* Add 4 ounces of yellow laundry soap to 1 quart of hot water. Heat until soap dissolves. Cool, then stir in 1/2 pound of powdered pumice and 1/2 cup of household ammonia. Mix thoroughly. (Order powdered pumice from the hardware store.) Remove as much of the smoky deposit as you can before applying a coat of the soap mixture with a paint brush. Allow it to remain on for 30 minutes. Scrub with a scrub brush and warm water. Sponge with plenty of warm water to rinse.

* You can brighten the brick facing of your fireplace by applying a coat of floor sealer. Wipe the surface dry after 20 minutes. A second coat may be applied later.

A Review of the Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport – A Bedrock Example of Accessibility and Usability

A view of the front of the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, showing the airport marquee sign in English and Dutch, and an art installation at one of the entrances.

A Review of the Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport
by Donna Jodhan, award-winning advocate and sight-loss coach

Introduction:
I respectfully submit that this is probably one of the most accessible, welcoming, and friendliest airports that I have ever had the pleasure of passing through.

So how would I rate their services? With 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest, here are my ratings.
Service desk assistance – 5
Assistance for guests with special needs – 5
Assistance at restaurant – 5

Remarks :
Access to the restaurant was extremely user friendly for a vision impaired person and navigating among the tables was not very difficult.

About airport staff:
More than friendly, welcoming, helpful, and their pleasant demeanour really stood out for me.

Any suggestions?
Just keep up your excellent work!

Ask Sight-Loss Coach Donna J. Jodhan – A Good Type of Whisk to Use; Using a Hand Grater

The words 'Ask the Coach' with seven branches coming off it, each represented by a relevant symbol: 'Expert', 'Consulting', 'Knowledge', 'Team', 'Advice', 'Trust', and 'Research'.

For this month:

  1. A question from Kirstan in Montreal, Canada. Kirstan is looking for a good type of whisk for her to use.My response: Kirstan, I recommend this one: Flat Whisk with Silicone Coils. It is very easy to use and even easier to clean. It washes very well in your kitchen sink. Just add a bit of dish soap, scrub gently, and rinse under warm tap water.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Tell us what you think! Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking! It’s important for us to share how we do things!

  2. A question from Charlotte in Apex North Carolina. On the subject of whisks, Charlotte is also looking for other types of whisks that are easy to use and clean. My response: Charlotte, try this type of whisk: 8 inch Silicone Balloon Whisk. It is easy to use, easy to clean, and fits well in your hand. Both this whisk along with the Flat Whisk with Silicone Coils are good solid products. Of course there are other good whisks out there.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking! It’s important for us to share how we do things!

  3. A question from Anna in Salem, Oregon. Anna would like to know if there is such a thing as a hand grater. My response: Anna, of course! There are tons of hand graters on the market and they all vary in price. Your friendly neighbourhood hardware store most certainly has a large supply of hand graters for you to choose from.

Ask the Scam Watcher – October 2024

Scams can vary in popularity and type depending on the time of year, but here are three scams that often see a rise in October:

  1. Halloween-themed Scams: Scammers take advantage of Halloween festivities to trick people with fake costume sales, party invitations, or themed contests. They might create fake websites or social media posts to lure victims into providing personal information or making purchases for items that don’t exist.
  2. Holiday Shopping Scams: With the approach of the holiday season, scammers start targeting shoppers with fake deals or phony websites offering deep discounts on popular items. They use enticing offers to trick people into providing credit card information or making payments for non-existent products.
  3. Charity Scams: October is also a time when various charitable events and campaigns ramp up, especially with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and other causes. Scammers exploit this by posing as representatives of charities to solicit donations. They might use fake websites, emails, or social media profiles to deceive people into giving money to fraudulent causes.

To avoid falling victim to these scams, be cautious about where you share personal information, verify the legitimacy of online offers and organizations, and always use secure payment methods.
