For this month:
Ten Tips for Learning Microsoft Edge
- Explore the User Interface: Take time to familiarize yourself with the layout, including the address bar, tabs, and menu options. This will help you navigate efficiently.
- Customize Your Home Page: Set your preferred home page by going to Settings > On startup. You can set a specific page, pages, or continue where you left off.
- Utilize Collections: Use the Collections feature to organize and save web pages, images, and text snippets. This is especially useful for research and projects.
- Sync Across Devices: Enable syncing to access your bookmarks, passwords, and settings across all your devices. Go to Settings > Profiles > Sync to set this up.
- Try Extensions: Enhance your browsing experience by adding extensions from the Microsoft Edge Add-ons store. Popular choices include ad blockers, password managers, and productivity tools.
- Keyboard Shortcuts: Learn and use keyboard shortcuts to navigate faster. For example, Ctrl+T opens a new tab, and Ctrl+Shift+N opens a new InPrivate window.
- Use InPrivate Mode: For private browsing sessions that don’t save history or cookies, use InPrivate mode by pressing Ctrl+Shift+P or selecting it from the menu.
- Explore Reading Mode: Activate Reading Mode for a distraction-free reading experience by clicking the book icon in the address bar. This is great for reading articles and long-form content.
- Leverage Web Capture: Use Web Capture to take screenshots of web pages. You can capture the full page or a selected area and annotate it if needed.
- Experiment with Edge’s Tools: Explore tools like Immersive Reader for improved readability, the built-in PDF viewer, and the Kids Mode for a safer browsing experience for children.
By exploring these features and tips, you’ll be able to leverage Microsoft Edge’s full potential and enhance your browsing experience.

From the Pages of Donna’s Travel Diary: What Makes for an Accessible Train Ride?
I really love train rides, and for me it all begins with being able to book my trip either via phone or through an online facility. (Up until now, I have done this by phone, but websites are becoming more accessible to enable us to book on our own.) Then there is the service at the station, then to the onboard service, and finally the arrival services. On the return trip, it is the same.
I have not taken a train ride in Canada since 2021, and when I did in 2021, ViaRail was simply wonderful to my friend and me. We traveled to Montreal from Toronto and then to Quebec City. Then back from Quebec City to Toronto. Staff was simply marvelous to us, and from arrival to departure and back, we could not have desired any better service.
I traveled via train in Europe in 2023 with my friend Jilla, from Budapest to Vienna and then from Vienna to the Czeck Republic. The ride was very pleasant, and I would recommend a train ride whenever you can.

Donna’s “Did You Know, Diary?” – December 2024
Here’s what I learned for this month.
1) How to know when pineapple is ripe to be pealed?
Just give a gentle tug to one of those spiky leaves and if it comes out easily then the pineapple is good to be peeled. If it does not, then the pineapple still needs to ripe properly.
2) A very important tip on the colour of your urine!
If it is clear, then your kidneys are functioning properly. If it is yellow, then it could either be from the pills that you may be taking, or there could be an infection. Best to check with your family physician.
3) About those pretty little candle flies!
If you are familiar with these pretty flying insects then here is an informational tip for you! The female candle flies are extremely vicious! They use their lights to attract the males. And when the males get close enough? They attack them and yes! They devour them!
4) Traveling to Saint Martin for the holidays?
If you live in North America and are traveling to the Dutch side of this wonderful island, then there is no need for you to take a power converter with you.
5) About gold!
Gold has been treasured by mankind for a long time, with gold bars and jewelry dating as early as 4000 B.C. It also has some very interesting properties. For instance, a cubic foot of gold weighs about half a ton, and a one-ounce piece of gold can be pressed to cover 300 square feet. Gold is refined to remove its impurities. This usually involves a lengthy process of heating and cooling cycles. Gold is tested with heat; it is made pure by going through the fire.
6) All about eating a bit too much turkey?
And during this holiday time, turkey quickly becomes one of the favoured meats. Just do not eat too much of the bird, as it tends to make you sleepy.
7) About refreshing your liquid honey when it starts to go sugary?
Place your jar in a bowl of very hot water and let it stay there for about half hour. Presto! The liquid honey returns.
8) What’s this about having liquid in a ceramic glass?
Well, ceramic glasses keep your liquid cooler for much longer than do metal glasses or glass ones.
From the Scam Watchers
During December, the holiday season can unfortunately be a prime time for scams. The three most popular scams around this time of year are:
- Holiday Shopping Scams: Scammers set up fake online stores or auction sites offering high-demand holiday items at unrealistically low prices. These sites may look legitimate but end up taking your money without delivering the products. Always verify the authenticity of websites and be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true.
- Charity Scams: Many people are in a giving mood during the holidays, making it a peak time for fraudsters posing as charities. They may contact you via email, phone, or social media, claiming to represent a charitable cause. It’s important to research any organization before donating and to use trusted and verified channels for contributions.
- Phishing Scams: During December, phishing attempts can increase as scammers exploit the holiday rush. They might send fake emails or texts pretending to be from banks, delivery services, or popular retailers, asking for personal information or login credentials under the guise of urgent holiday updates or promotions. Be cautious with unsolicited messages and verify the sender’s authenticity before clicking on links or providing any personal details.
Always be vigilant, especially during busy times like the holidays, and double-check any requests or offers that seem suspicious.
