A Bit of This and a Bit of That from Donna’s “Did You Know, Diary?”
Award-winning sight-loss coach, author, and advocate

Welcome to my Donna’s did you know diary for this month and pleased to share the following with you.

Here’s what I learned for this month.

Here’s what I learned for this month.

1) How to know when pineapple is ripe to be pealed?
Just give a gentle tug to one of those spiky leaves and if it comes out easily then the pineapple is good to be pealed.
If it does not then the pineapple still needs to ripe properly.

2) A very important tip on the colour of your urine!
If it is clear then your kidneys are functioning properly.
If it is yellow then it could either be from the pills that you may be taking or there could be an infection.
Best to check with your family physician.

3) About those pretty little candle flies!
If you are familiar with these pretty flying insects then here is an informational tip for you!
The female candle flies are extremely vicious!
They use their lights to attract the males
And when the males get close enough?
They attack them and yes! They devour them!

4) Traveling to Saint Martin for the holidays?
If you live in North America and are traveling to the Dutch side of this wonderful island,
Then there is no need for you to take a power converter with you.

5) About gold!
Gold has been treasured by mankind for a long time,
with gold bars and jewelry dating as early as 4000 B.C.
It also has some very interesting properties.
For instance, a cubic foot of gold weighs about half-a-ton,
and a one-ounce piece of
gold can be pressed to cover 300 square feet.
Gold is refined to remove its impurities.
This usually involves a lengthy process of heating and cooling cycles.
Gold is tested with heat; it is made pure by going through the fire.

6) All about eating a bit too much turkey?
And during this holiday time turkey quickly becomes one of the favoured meats.
Just do not eat too much of the bird as it tends to make you sleepy.

7) About refreshing your liquid honey when it starts to go sugary?
Place your jar in a bowl of very hot water and let it stay there for about half hour.
Presto! The liquid honey returns.

8) What’s this about having liquid in a ceramic glass?
Well, ceramic glasses keep your liquid cooler for much longer than do metal glasses or glass ones.

December 2024

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this month:  a question from Sandy in Newark New Jersey.

Sandy is looking for an easy to use garlic press.  Are there any garlic presses that can be used by a vision impaired person?

My response:

Sandy, and a definite yes!

I am vision impaired and I sometimes use a garlic press when I am processing my garlic in my kitchen.

Do not be afraid to visit your nearest hardware or kitchen store and explain to them that you need to purchase a garlic press that is easy to use as a vision impaired person.

Let them give you a demo as to how to use it.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

A question from Shena in Ottawa Canada.

Shena wants a recommendation as a good type of skewer for her to use.

My response:

Shena, I like those wonderful bamboo skewers.

They fit easily into my hand, are easy to keep clean, and are dish washer safe.

Moreover, they work well with heat.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

A question from Kerby in Billings Montana.

Kerby wants to find a gadget that can help him to core his apples and pears.

My response:

Kerby there are several very good apple/pear corers on the market and they come in various sizes and you should purchase one that fits comfortably in your hand.

Make sure that they do.

No worse thing than to have be using a corer that is difficult to use because it does not fit your hand comfortably.

From the Pages of Donna’s Travel Diary: What Makes for an Accessible Train Ride?

I really love train rides, and for me it all begins with being able to book my trip either via phone or through an online facility. (Up until now, I have done this by phone, but websites are becoming more accessible to enable us to book on our own.) Then there is the service at the station, then to the onboard service, and finally the arrival services. On the return trip, it is the same.

I have not taken a train ride in Canada since 2021, and when I did in 2021, ViaRail was simply wonderful to my friend and me. We traveled to Montreal from Toronto and then to Quebec City. Then back from Quebec City to Toronto. Staff was simply marvelous to us, and from arrival to departure and back, we could not have desired any better service.

I traveled via train in Europe in 2023 with my friend Jilla, from Budapest to Vienna and then from Vienna to the Czeck Republic. The ride was very pleasant, and I would recommend a train ride whenever you can.

I’m Donna J. Jodhan, enjoying my travels. To learn more about me as a sight-loss coach and author, visit http://www.donnajodhan.com!

On your next trip, you could enrich your down time with some of my audio mysteries. Take them with you wherever you go! In the car, on the plane, on the bus or train, at the beach—anywhere!

From the Scam Watchers

During December, the holiday season can unfortunately be a prime time for scams. The three most popular scams around this time of year are:

  1. Holiday Shopping Scams: Scammers set up fake online stores or auction sites offering high-demand holiday items at unrealistically low prices. These sites may look legitimate but end up taking your money without delivering the products. Always verify the authenticity of websites and be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true.
  2. Charity Scams: Many people are in a giving mood during the holidays, making it a peak time for fraudsters posing as charities. They may contact you via email, phone, or social media, claiming to represent a charitable cause. It’s important to research any organization before donating and to use trusted and verified channels for contributions.
  3. Phishing Scams: During December, phishing attempts can increase as scammers exploit the holiday rush. They might send fake emails or texts pretending to be from banks, delivery services, or popular retailers, asking for personal information or login credentials under the guise of urgent holiday updates or promotions. Be cautious with unsolicited messages and verify the sender’s authenticity before clicking on links or providing any personal details.

Always be vigilant, especially during busy times like the holidays, and double-check any requests or offers that seem suspicious.

Practical and natural!
Welcome to my Donna’s did you know diary for this month and pleased to share the following with you.

Here’s what I learned for this month.

1) Something about homing pigeons?
They use their sense of smell to help them navigate.

2) The knives you need in your kitchen?
A chef’s knife,
A paring knife,
And a serrated knife.

3) About different types of Ketchup?
There is tomato ketchup and ketchup made out of papaya.

4) And this may not be mosquito season but here are 2 tips for next year.
Musquitoes thrive on those wearing dark colours.
They also enjoy feasting on those who have had a beer or more.

5) ant to give an ironed look to your clothes in a hurry?
Pop your clothes into the clothes dryer for just a few minutes and presto!
All done!

6) Rat versus camel?
A rat can last longer without water than a camel.

7) About your stomach
Your stomach has to produce a new layer of mucus every two weeks or it will digest itself.

8) Drop a raisin in a glass of champagne?
A raisin dropped in a glass of fresh champagne will bounce up and down continuously from the bottom of the glass to the top.

9) About a duck’s quack?
A duck’s quack doesn’t echo. No one knows why.

10) About scorpions?
If one places a tiny amount of liquor on a scorpion, it will instantly go mad and sting itself to death. (Who was the sadist who discovered this??)

Ask the Coach!

November 2024

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this month:  a question from Bonnie in Boston Massachusetts.

Bonnie is looking for suggestions for safe oven racks.

My response:

Bonnie, if you can give me a bit more info on your question?

Are you seeking an oven rack that is easy to maneuver?

I find that most oven racks are easy to maneuver as long as you learn how to safely remove them.

Or are you looking for an oven rack that is easy to clean?

If you could be a bit more specific I’d be happy to help.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

A question from Carol in Vancouver British Columbia.

Carol is looking for recommendations on cookie scoops.

My response:

Carol, my initial response is that everyone has a preference for the type of cookie scoop that best suits them.

I use a cookie scoop that measures a tablespoon.

It enables me to easily ensure that I do not spill my mixture over my counter.

There is nothing very special about it and it can be used by anyone.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

A question from Nina in the Dominican Republic.

Nina would like to learn about cookie cutters.

My response:

Nina, cookie cutters do indeed exist and you can find a huge variety of them at any kitchen store.

There are large ones, medium sized ones, and small ones.

It all depends on how big or how small you want your cookies to be.

Additionally, what shape would you like your cookie to be.

There are a multitude of shapes to be found.

A Review of the London, England, Coach Services
by Donna Jodhan, award-winning advocate and sight-loss coach

Introduction:
And I can only describe these services as a true British welcome as only the Brits know how to do.

So how would I rate their services? With 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest, here are my ratings.
Service desk assistance – 5
Assistance for passengers with special needs – 5
Assistance at restaurant – 5

Remarks :
Access to the restaurant was extremely user friendly for a vision impaired person and navigating among the tables was not very difficult.

About coach staff:
Very pleasant, friendly, welcoming, and knowledgable.

My meals:
Very adequate

Any suggestions?
Keep up the great service.
