10 tips for learning the Narrator screen reader

Sure, learning to use a screen reader like Narrator can significantly enhance accessibility for individuals with visual impairments. Here are 10 tips to help you get started with learning the Narrator screen reader:
1.
Explore Basic Navigation: Familiarize yourself with fundamental navigation commands such as moving through elements on the screen, navigating by headings, links, and landmarks.
2.
Keyboard Shortcuts: Learn the keyboard shortcuts specific to Narrator. These shortcuts are essential for quick navigation and interaction with various elements on your computer.
3.
Practice Regularly: Consistent practice is key to becoming proficient with a screen reader. Regular use will help you gain confidence and improve your speed and accuracy.
4.
Use Help and Resources: Take advantage of the user guides, tutorials, and online resources available for Narrator. Microsoft provides comprehensive guides and tutorials on their website.
5.
Customize Settings: Narrator offers various customization options. Explore and adjust settings such as voice type, speed, pitch, verbosity, and other preferences to suit your needs and preferences.
6.

7.
Get Support and Community: Join online forums, communities, or groups where users share tips, ask questions, and provide support. Learning from others’ experiences can be incredibly beneficial.
8.
Learn Braille Integration (if applicable): If you use a Braille display in conjunction with Narrator, learn how to integrate it and practice using Braille for navigation and interaction.
9.
Practice Reading Aloud: Narrator often reads out text. Practicing reading aloud as Narrator speaks can help reinforce understanding and improve comprehension.
10.
Stay Patient and Persistent: Learning any new technology takes time. Be patient with yourself and persistent in your efforts. Over time, you’ll become more comfortable and efficient with the screen reader.

Important tips from the travel table
From the pages of Donna’s diary
An ideal travel agent

In my humble opinion, the ideal travel agent is one who is always willing and ready to help you from start to finish.
It all starts when I present my favourite travel agent with an idea for a trip.
Next she goes away and does a thorough search of my desired location that includes air fare, hotels, and activities at my desired location.

She presents me with about 3 choices and shares the pros and cons with me for each choice.
Then she reccomends her own personal choice.
She is patient, innovative, and creative.
She takes the time to plan with me and does not complete her job until I have either chosen something or I have decided not to pursue my intentions.

That’s my ideal travel agent! Very knowledgeable, resourceful and always ready to answer my questions.

A bit of this and a bit of that from Donna’s did you know diary

Welcome to my Donna’s did you know diary for March and pleased to share the following with you.

Here’s what I learned for this month.
1)A bit of interesting trivia
“Bald eagles primarily eat fish and can live up to 40 years in the wild. Furthermore, they are monogamous and remain faithful to their mate until death. These amazing birds are especially renowned for their excellent eyesight. Eagles have two foveae, or centers of focus, in the retina of each eye that allow them to see both forward and to the side at the same time. (Human retinas have only one.)
Depending on which way an eagle looks, the lens of its eye focuses an image on one fovea or the other. The rear fovea is for forward, stereoscopic vision, and the other is for looking sideways. Both foveae are more densely lined with rods and cones than those of human eyes, giving them much greater resolving power.
Eagles have color vision, and while their eyes are not as large as a human’s, their sharpness is at least four times that of a person with perfect vision. While soaring, gliding, or flapping, they are capable of seeing fish in the water from several hundred feet above the surface or identify a rabbit moving almost a mile away. An eagle flying in a fixed position at an altitude of 1,000 feet could spot prey as small as a mouse over an area of almost three square miles!

2) Okay, and what is the difference between ointment and cream?
Ointment is thicker than cream and more care needs to be taken when spreading ointment.
It is easier to spread cream.

3) About one’s hands
The hand’s complex anatomy consists of 27 bones, 27 joints, 34 muscles, over 100 ligaments and tendons, numerous blood vessels, nerves, and soft tissue. It is important to understand the normal anatomy of the hand in order to learn about diseases and conditions that can affect our hands.
Our ability to function in everyday life depends a great deal on our hands. Feeding one’s self, bathing and a wide range of other tasks would not be possible without hands. It’s hard to imagine a life without two of them, but we all have seen or known some who has had to make such a life changing adjustment.

4) What exactly is a sheet pan?
Well, a sheet pan is used when cooking veggies and meat together.
It is good for one meal combinations.

5) What’s this about tea?
Brewing tea leaves tastes better than using a tea bag.

6) About prolonging the life of strawberries?
Cut them up into small slices and sprinkle sugar over them.
Store in a container.

7. About your phone charger?
It consists of the connector and a charger block
you insert one end of the connector into the block
and the other end into your I device.

8) Making it easier to cut your nails?
Soak your nails in warm water for just a few minutes before cutting.

That’s it for this month.

Ask sight loss Coach Donna J. Jodhan – keeping food fresh in the fridge, omlet makers for the microwave, dealing with spills in the microwave

Ask the Coach!

March 2024

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this month:  a question from Nikki in Stokholm Sweden.

Nikki would like to know if there are ways to cover dishes and open containers of food before placing them in the fridge?

My response:

Nikki:  and the answer is a definite yes!

I use stretch tops made of silicon.

They are very good, keeps food fresh, and most of all they are very flexible.

They stretch very well and I use them all of the time.

I hope that this helps.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

a question from Shaun in Miami Florida.

Shaun would like to know if there are omelet makers for the microwave.

My response:

Shaun and a definite yes!

They are several on the market.

I have used one for several years now.

It makes good omelets, and it saves a lot of time.

Some folks may still prefer to cook their omelets on the stove top.

Microwave omelet makers usually have to compartments.

So you place your egg mixture into one side then you place your toppings into the other side.

Then you  take the side with the topping and close it over the side.

Then cook away.

Omelet makers usually come with instructions as to how long to cook for and actually how to prepare your mixture and topping.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

a question from Heather in Providence Road Island.

Heather is looking for a way to deal with spills in her microwave.

My response:

Hear and yes!  I recommend that you purchase those microwave mats designed to avoid spills.

I use a silicon mat in my microwave.

It is round, and it heats your food really well.

The food heats evenly.

What I like about my mat is that it is easy to handle.

You can remove your dish or plate from the microwave with the mat under dish or plate.

The mat is not going to slip away.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

To contact me with a question or a thought; please send an email to me at donnajodhan@gmail.com and I’ll be sure to respond in 5 business days at the most.

If you wish me to respond earlier then put the word important in your subject line and I’ll do my best to respond more quickly.

Until the next time then!

I’m Donna wishing you a pleasant day and thanking everyone for their insightful feedback and suggestions!

A bit of this and a bit of that from donna’s monthly diary – what I learned for February

February 2024

A bit of this and a bit of that from Donna’s did you know diary

Award winning sight loss coach, author and advocate

Practical and natural!

Welcome to my Donna’s did you know diary for this month and pleased to share the following with you.

Here’s what I learned for this month.

  • Valuable tips about how to use various oils when cooking and baking:

A good virgin olive oil is a regular go to for cooking and especially salad dressings.

Use for cooking on low to medium heat.

Peanut oil is great for higher heat,

frying and stir-frying but should be used in moderation.

Not for people with nut allergies.

Some baking requires oil, such as muffins,

but you want a lighter oil for that such as canola oil.

Sesame oil is used in moderation for Chinese and Asian cooking.

The general go to is olive oil.

It is heart healthy.

  • About prescriptions:

A good tip is to throw them out about six months after they expire.

However, you need to make sure that you know the date of expiration.

  • Looking to have the dishes on your dish rack dry faster?

Wash and rinse in hot water.

  • A soothing remedy for itchy skin?

Wash gently with a cotton ball or piece of cotton dipped in Witch Hazel!

  • And here is something of note for drinking glasses.

You need to clean them regularly.

Clean with a damp cloth.

Because if you don’t, they can dry rot.

  • Some important info about ants.

They enter your home in order to seek food and shelter.

To keep them out then;

Seal your food stuffs and plug your crevices.

Ants love sweet stuff.

You may want to use honey pots to keep them out.

  • Scientists found these facts about only children.

They get higher grades.

In fact, the more siblings a child has, the harder it is for them to make good grades.

Say researchers, “As family size increases, parents talk less to each child

about school, have lower educational expectations, save less for college,

and have fewer educational materials available.”

but have no fear! By fifth grade, researchers find that only children’s social skills have developed so well that they’re on par with their peers.

They struggle in kindergarten. Well, struggle socially anyway!

Only children may show signs of having greater language perception and processing skills.

  • Some yearend terms from the Oxford dictionary

*   Anosmia — the loss of the sense of smell, either total or in part

Many people who contracted Covid-19 have suffered from anosmia.

* Riz — “,” a shortened form of “charisma,”

The Gen Z slang term derived from “charisma”

This term  went viral this year after the  actor Tom Holland claimed to have none.

* Swiftie. A term used for a  pop fan of Taylor Swift.

* “beige flag” a characteristic suggesting a partner is  boring),

A review of the Marshall store in the Fairview Mall – accessibility friendly

A review of the Marshall store in the Fairview Mall
By Donna Jodhan
Award winning advocate and sight loss coach

Introduction:
This store is very warm and welcoming and its staff go way beyond the call duty to provide service.

So how would I rate their services? With 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest, here are my ratings.
Service desk assistance – 5
Assistance for customers with special needs – 5
Assistance at store – 5

Remarks :
Access to the store was extremely user friendly for a vision impaired person and navigating among and between the aisles was not very difficult.

About store staff:
They are extremely helpful, service oriented, and ever ready to help.

Any suggestions?
Keep up your magnificent work!

For any stain:

* Make a sudsy solution of Tide laundry detergent and water. Brush the suds into the stain vertically and horizontally with a soft brush. Blot dry as much as possible. If stain persists, repeat process.

Grease Stains:

* Pour a generous amount of either baking soda or cornmeal over the spots and brush lightly through the pile of the rug. Leave overnight and vacuum off the next day.

* Rub with a solution of vinegar or lemon juice and warm sudsy water. Blot and repeat if necessary. Or blot up thoroughly. Then pour club soda over the spot. Blot again. 10 helpful tips for learning the NVDA screen reader

Learning to use the NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access) screen reader can greatly enhance the computer experience for individuals with visual impairments. Here are 10 helpful tips to get started with NVDA:
1.
Install NVDA:
Download and install NVDA from the official website (https://www.nvaccess.org/). Make sure to install the latest version to benefit from the most up-to-date features and improvements.

3.
NVDA Modifier Key:
Familiarize yourself with the NVDA modifier key (usually Caps Lock) as it’s crucial for executing NVDA commands. Press it along with other keys for various functions.
4.
Speech Rate Adjustment:
Adjust the speech rate to a comfortable level. Use the NVDA key (Caps Lock) + the Up or Down arrow keys to increase or decrease the speech rate.
5.

6.

Understand the concept of review mode (NVDA + Space) for exploring web pages, documents, and other content efficiently.
7.
NVDA Add-ons:
Consider installing NVDA add-ons to enhance functionality. Add-ons can provide additional features and support for various applications and websites.
8.
Practice Regularly:
Practice using NVDA regularly to build proficiency. Try reading different types of documents, browsing the web, and using various software applications.
9.
Customize NVDA Settings:
Explore NVDA’s settings to customize speech settings, keyboard shortcuts, and other preferences to suit your needs and workflow.
10.
Join the NVDA Community:
Join online forums, mailing lists, or social media groups dedicated to NVDA users. These communities are excellent resources for asking questions, sharing tips, and troubleshooting issues.
Remember that learning to use a screen reader like NVDA can take time and patience. Start with the basics, gradually build your skills, and don’t hesitate to seek help or resources when needed. Important tips from the travel table
From the pages of Donna’s diary
Where to pack one’s medication

Now, I am going to focus on where to safely pack one’s medication when preparing for air travel. If you are like me with a lot of medication, here is what I do.

I put it all into my carry on. I separate my medication into separate zipper bags. The vitamins go into one zipper bag and my daily medication or vital medication go into another bag.

I put both bags into my carry on. However, I would normally pack another small pouch into my carry on and this contains such pills as for nausea, upset stomach, and other similar types of situations. Finally I always remember to pack some tylenol and Aspirin in my purse.

I’m Donna J. Jodhan enjoying my travels.

A bit of this and a bit of that from Donna’s did you know diary
Award winning sight loss coach, author and advocate

Welcome to my Donna’s did you know diary for February and pleased to share the following with you.

Here’s what I learned for this month.
1) How can you tell that jade is real?
Why! It is cold to the touch.

2) About the behaviour of the sea!
Best time of the year to swim in the sea is during the months of July, August, and September when the sea is calmest.
The sea is usually roughest in December and January.
And the sea is usually highly populated with those jelly fish that sting during March and April. Their colours are normally pink or blue.

3) About travel seasons!
Low season is usually from early April to mid December and high season is usually from Mid December to end of March.

4) Having problems getting rid of those persistent paint smells?
Just place a bowl of water in the corner of the room where the smells are coming from
And add a few drops of white vinegar to the bowl of water.

5) Differences when cooking with gas versus cooking with electricity
Gas cooks faster but food does not stay warm as long as when cooking with electricity.
Gas cooks faster than electricity.

6) An interesting tidbit on ketchup:
There seems to be 2 different types of ketchup on the market today:
Tomato and o yes! Ketchup made from papaya.

7) An important tip on beer!
Before serving or offering beer, check its colour and if it is dark then it is not good.

8) Now, if you have 2 copies in your hand of the same document, how can you tell which is the copy and which is the original?
The copy’s letter head will always appear in black and the original’s letter head will be in either blue or another colour.

That’s it for this month.

Ask sight loss coach Donna J. Jodhan – Finding wooden spoons for stirring the pot, Cooking rice and pasta in the microwave, cooking bacon in the microwave without making a mess

Ask the Coach!

February 2024

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this month :  a question from Ryan in Dublin Ireland.

Ryan is looking for Finding wooden spoons for stirring the pot

My response:

Ryan, I like using wooden spoons to stir my pot.

You can find them in almost every kitchen store or even in a hardware store.

Wooden spoons are much better when using to stir your pot as they do not scratch the bottom of your pot.

Rubber made spoons are also quite good.

I hope this helps.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

a question from Lilli in Budapest Hungary.

Lilli would like to know if there is a way to cook rice and pasta in the microwave.

My response:

Lilli, yes!  I believe that there are those special gadgets or pots that you can use in your microwave.

They have a cover, are very easy to place in your microwave, and I recently came across one at a kitchen store.

I hope that this helps.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

a question from Shane in Saint Lewis Missouri.

Shane is wondering about Finding a way to cook bacon in the microwave without the bacon splattering.

My response:

Absolutely Shane and I recently bought one of those special gadgets that you can use when cooking bacon in your microwave.

It is a neat little gadget and has a cover to prevent your bacon from splattering in your microwave.

Nothing worse than having to clean up after bacon has splattered in your microwave.

I bought my bacon cooker at www.blindmicemegamall.com

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

To contact me with a question or a thought; please send an email to me at donnajodhan@gmail.com and I’ll be sure to respond in 5 business days at the most.

If you wish me to respond earlier then put the word important in your subject line and I’ll do my best to respond more quickly.

Until the next time then!

I’m Donna wishing you a pleasant day and thanking everyone for their insightful feedback and suggestions!
