From our 10 tips on technology series
Hello everyone:
Welcome to my 10 tip series where each month I’ll be sharing 10 tips on various pieces of technology.
This would include tips on popular screen readers, office software, and browsers.
If you have any suggestions on what you would like me to share then by all means! Write to me at donnajodhan@sterlingcreations.ca.
For this month:
10 tips on how to use Facebook

1. Update Your Privacy Settings
Check who can see your posts, friend list, and profile info. Go to Settings > Privacy and adjust it to suit your comfort level.

2. Curate Your News Feed
Unfollow people or pages that post content you don’t want to see. You can stay friends but stop seeing their updates.

3. Use the “Favorites” Feature
Add close friends or favorite pages to your Favorites list so their posts show up at the top of your feed.

4. Create Lists for Friends
Organize friends into custom lists like “Family,” “Work,” or “Close Friends” to control who sees what when you post.

5. Be Selective with Friend Requests
Don’t feel pressured to accept everyone. Only add people you know or trust to avoid spam and scams.

6. Use Facebook Groups for Community
Join or create groups based on your interests. It’s a great way to meet like-minded people or stay updated on specific topics.

7. Secure Your Account
Turn on two-factor authentication to keep your account safe. You’ll find it under Settings > Security and Login.

8. Schedule Posts with Meta Business Suite
If you’re managing a page or running a business, you can schedule posts in advance using Meta’s tools.

9. Engage with Posts You Care About
Like, comment, and share posts you enjoy — Facebook uses your activity to shape your feed.

10. Take Breaks if Needed
If you ever feel overwhelmed, use the “Take a Break” or “Mute” features to step back without deleting your account.

Important tips from the travel table

From the pages of Donna’s diary
A cable car ride

On my river boat cruise to the Rhine in 2024 with my friend Jilla, I had 2 opportunities to enjoy cable rides and I enjoyed them both.

My favourite was the one in Switzerland where we were taken high up the mountain in the city of Basil.
The air was fresh and o so very cool.
The cable car operators were extremely aware of my needs as a vision impaired person and made very sure that at all times I was safe and enjoying my trip to the fullest.
Upon reaching the top Jilla and I enjoyed our walk around, had a snack at a very nice little restaurant, and inter mingled with with others.
I especially enjoyed the ambiance and felt really privileged that I was able to enjoy this.

I’m Donna J. Jodhan enjoying my travels.

On your next trip you could enrich your down time with some of my audio mysteries. Take them with you wherever you go!
In the car, on the plane, on the bus or train, at the beach, anywhere!

Practical and natural!
Welcome to my Donna’s did you know diary for this month and pleased to share the following with you.

Here’s what I learned for this month.

1) About the phrase the rule of thumb
The phrase “rule of thumb” is derived from an old English law which stated that you couldn’t beat your wife with anything wider than your thumb.

2) About the first Motorola product
The first product Motorola started to develop was a record player for automobiles. At that time, the most known player on the market was Victrola, so they called themselves Motorola.

3) Interesting tip on quick sand
By raising your legs slowly and lying on your back, you cannot sink into quicksand.

4) About Celery
Celery has negative calories. It takes more calories to eat a piece of celery than the celery has in it to begin with.

5) Not crying while pealing onions?
Chewing gum while peeling onions will keep you from crying.

5) About the Guinis book of records
The Guinness Book of Records holds the record for being the book most often stolen from public libraries.

6) About astronauts
Astronauts are not allowed to eat beans before they go into space because passing wind in a spacesuit damages them.

7) About bats
Bats always turn left when exiting a cave!

8) About calluses
Calluses form as a response to constant friction, pressure, or irritation.
Over time, the skin thickens to protect itself, leading to a hardened, insensitive surface. This is often necessary for physical protection, but it also reduces our ability to feel.

9) What are some of the most unpopular foods in a kid’s lunch kit?
Snap peas,
Beans,
Tuna sandwiches,
Egg salad sandwiches.

10) A Facebook tip!
If you want to ensure that no one knows when you leave home to travel for any length of time:
Then simply do not post on Facebook and do not post any photos of your trip while you are gone.
You can post all you want after you have returned.

Donna has been in the business since 2000 and her many roles have allowed her to recognize that there is a growing need for consumers and clients to be made aware of some of the most dangerous and popular scams.
Donna herself has been unwittingly scammed over the years a few times and now she is using her skills, experience, knowledge, and expertise to help others avoid pitfalls and heartache.
And as a vision impaired professional and person she is ready to help you stay ahead!
Donna knows only too well how much we all need to work overtime to protect the most vulnerable from those unscrupulous scammers!

Please read her latest suite of scams and she would love to hear from you with your own feedback.

1. Fake Online Stores & Shopping Scams

What happens: Scammers create realistic-looking websites or social media ads offering popular items at deep discounts.

Red flags: No contact info, sketchy domain names, or payment via gift cards or wire transfers.

Why December: Holiday shopping is in full swing, and people are desperate for deals and last-minute gifts.

2. Charity Scams

What happens: Fraudsters pose as charitable organizations, especially after natural disasters or during year-end giving pushes.

Red flags: Pressure to donate immediately, vague info about how the funds are used, or requests for untraceable payments.

Why December: Many people donate before the year’s end for tax purposes or as part of a holiday tradition.

3. Delivery & Package Scams

What happens: You get a text or email saying a package couldn’t be delivered, often with a link to “reschedule” or “verify” info.

Red flags: Unfamiliar tracking numbers, messages from unofficial email addresses, or links asking for personal info.

Why December: With so many people receiving packages, it’s easier to trick someone into clicking or responding.

If when trying it on it fits too slack then you need to try on a size smaller.
If when trying on it fits too tightly then you need to try on a size larger.

2) An interesting fact about changes to your voice and looks.
Your voice never really changes over the years.
Your looks do.

3) About water?
The earth is made up of 70% water
And 97% of this is the ocean.

4) Some important info re the differences between type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes occurs when one needs to take insulin because the body is no longer producing enough insulin.
Type 2 diabetes occurs when one has a poor life style that includes a poor diet.
It can also be caused by high blood pressure

5) Some tips on making your scrambled eggs more fluffy?
You can use any of these ingredients in your batter.
Sour cream, mayonnaise, milk, or even beer or baking soda.

6) A helpful indicator for testing a battery’s existence?
If the battery feels light when you hold it then the energy of the battery is gone.
But if it feels heavy when you hold it then it is good to go.

7) About the sky on a fall day?
It is normally very blue!

8) About orchids?
They are one of the favourite foods of those garden insect prowlers.

9) About migrating birds!
It is a bit too late now to look for them but birds usually start their Southern migration in mid to late September and it is all over by early October.

Ask sight loss coach Donna J. Jodhan – How to tell when cheese or bread is mouldy, When is it time to throw away a sponge Ways to deal with an aggressive sales person

Ask the Coach!

November 2025

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this month:  a question from Nina in Miami Florida.

Nina would like to know how to tell when cheese or bread is moldy?

My response:

Nina, this is when my senses of smell and touch kick in.

As someone with a vision impairment, I do not have enough vision to see the offending moss or moulde.

So I first sniff cheese or bread and if it smells funny then this is my first indicator.

Next and in order to confirm my suspicion, I touch the surface of the cheese or bread and if it has a rough like feel to it then this is my confirmation.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

A question from  Marina in Madrid Spain.

Marina would like to know when it is time to throw away a sponge?

My response:

Marina, I do this when any of the following is happening.

My sponge is no longer smooth.

The surface is rough and bumpy.

Pieces of the sponge are breaking off easily.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

A question from Lucy in New Castle New Hamshire.

Lucy is looking for ways to deal with aggressive sales persons.

My response:

Lucy, I usually try to avoid them whenever I detect that their voices are raised with demands or commands.

If they are pushy or abrasive, I do my best to move away.

However, this does not mean that you could not try to temper the interaction by using a calming demeanor?

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

To contact me with a question or a thought; please send an email to me at donnajodhan@gmail.com and I’ll be sure to respond in 5 business days at the most.

If you wish me to respond earlier then put the word important in your subject line and I’ll do my best to respond more quickly.

Until the next time then!

I’m Donna wishing you a pleasant day and thanking everyone for their insightful feedback and suggestions!

For this month:
10 tips on how to use twitter

Sure thing! Here are 10 tips to help you get the most out of Twitter, whether you’re using it for fun, networking, or building a personal brand:

🧠 1. Define Your Purpose
Know why you’re on Twitter: Is it for news, networking, promoting your work, or just for fun? This helps guide who you follow and what you tweet.

🗣️ 2. Tweet Consistently
Stay active by tweeting regularly. You don’t have to flood the feed—just enough to stay visible and engaged.

🧵 3. Use Threads for Longer Thoughts
Got more to say than fits in one tweet? Use a thread (a series of connected tweets) to tell a story, break down ideas, or share tips.

🔍 4. Follow Smart
Follow people who align with your interests or goals. This shapes your timeline into something actually useful and inspiring.

🎯 5. Engage, Don’t Just Broadcast
Reply to tweets, ask questions, retweet with your thoughts—interaction is key to building connections and visibility.

🏷️ 6. Use Hashtags Wisely
Hashtags help your tweets reach a wider audience, but don’t overdo it. 1–2 relevant ones per tweet is a good rule.

👀 7. Watch What’s Trending
Check the trending topics for current events or conversations worth jumping into (if they align with your vibe).

📸 8. Add Visuals
Tweets with images, GIFs, or videos tend to get more engagement. Use them to grab attention or add flavor to your posts.

🛠️ 9. Use Twitter Tools
Try tools like TweetDeck, Typefully, or Buffer to schedule tweets, track analytics, or organize your timeline.

🧹 10. Clean Up Your Feed Regularly
Unfollow accounts that no longer add value. Your timeline should be a place you enjoy and learn from.

Important tips from the travel table

From the pages of Donna’s diary
Memories of European Cathedrals

Over the last few years I have had the privilege and pleasure to visit so many European Cathedrals across Europe.
In Germany, Austria, France, Hungary, Prague, Amsterdam, and Switzerland.

And for the most part I will say that they were all very accessible and easy to navigate.
Staff at all of these Cathedrals were all so very friendly, warm, and very helpful.
This really made my visits not just memorable but never to forget.
The tour guides were marvelous, knowledgeable, and always ready to help.

There was so much history to absorb and I can only say that the World is richer for all of these Cathedrals.
A special thank you to my friend Jilla for having walked the walk with me.

I’m Donna J. Jodhan enjoying my travels.

A chef’s knife,
A paring knife,
And a serrated knife.

3) About different types of Ketchup?
There is tomato ketchup and ketchup made out of papaya.

4) And this may not be mosquito season but here are 2 tips for next year.
Musquitoes thrive on those wearing dark colours.
They also enjoy feasting on those who have had a beer or more.

5) ant to give an ironed look to your clothes in a hurry?
Pop your clothes into the clothes dryer for just a few minutes and presto!
All done!

6) Rat versus camel?
A rat can last longer without water than a camel.

7) About your stomach
Your stomach has to produce a new layer of mucus every two weeks or it will digest itself.

8) Drop a raisin in a glass of champagne?
A raisin dropped in a glass of fresh champagne will bounce up and down continuously from the bottom of the glass to the top.

9) About a duck’s quack?
A duck’s quack doesn’t echo. No one knows why.

10) About scorpions?
If one places a tiny amount of liquor on a scorpion, it will instantly go mad and sting itself to death. (Who was the sadist who discovered this??)

In November, as the holiday shopping season kicks off with events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, scammers become particularly active. Here are three prominent scams to be cautious of during this period:
PayPal Newsroom
1. Online Shopping Scams
Scammers create fraudulent websites or ads that mimic legitimate retailers, offering enticing deals to lure shoppers. These counterfeit sites often aim to steal personal and financial information or sell counterfeit products. To protect yourself, always verify the legitimacy of a website before making a purchase. Look for signs such as secure URLs (beginning with “https://”), read customer reviews, and be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true. Additionally, avoid clicking on links from unsolicited emails or messages.

2. Delivery Notification Scams
With the increase in online shopping, scammers send fake delivery notifications via email or text messages, claiming to be from reputable courier services. These messages often contain links that, when clicked, can install malware or lead to phishing sites designed to steal personal information. Be wary of unexpected delivery notices, especially those requesting additional information or payment. Instead of clicking on provided links, visit the courier’s official website to track packages or contact them directly.

3. Charity Scams
During the holiday season, charitable giving increases, and scammers exploit this generosity by posing as legitimate charities. They may contact you via phone, email, or social media, soliciting donations for fake causes. To ensure your contributions reach genuine organizations, research charities before donating. Use resources like the Canada Revenue Agency’s list of registered charities to verify legitimacy, and consider donating directly through official charity websites rather than through unsolicited requests.

Staying vigilant and informed can help you navigate the holiday season safely and avoid falling victim to these prevalent scams.

1) What is the difference between Irish coffee and Royal coffee?
Irish coffee contains Irish whisky.
Royal coffee contains brandy

2) The functions of the vein and the artery:
Arteries carry blood from the heart
And veins bring blood to the heart.

3) How can you tell that shampoo is no longer good to use?
Well, it is watery.
It has lost its smell/fragrance.

4) The difference between chlorine and bromine?
Chlorine is less costly than Bromine.
Bromine is much easier with one’s eyes than is Chlorine.
Both are used in the water of a swimming pool.

5) Some healing powers of honey?
Make a mixture of 3 parts honey and one part of lime or lemon juice.
Shake well.
Take a teaspoon of this mixture before retiring to your bed every night.
Voila! You get to sleep like a baby.

6) Another healing power of honey?
If you need to take care of a cut or bruise, here is what you can do.
Make a poultice out of a paste of honey
And wrap firmly around cut or bruise.
Leave for a few hours.
Voila! Cut/bruise is much better.

7) A possible reason for taking one’s blood pressure on the left arm?
Just maybe it’s because one’s heart is on the left side.

8) About water in your boat versus water around you?
Water around you does not sink your boat.
It is the water that gets into your boat.

9) How do you ensure that contents of a bottle will not leak?
First, fill the bottle with water and cover tightly.
Next turn the bottle upside down.
If the water stays in the bottle then it is safe to fill your bottle with your desired contents.

10) About your blood pressure and your pulse?
Your blood pressure rate is based on your mental state .
Best to take it when you are calm and settled.
Sit comfortable with enough back support.
Do not cross your legs.
As for your pulse rate?
It is based on your movement/activity before you take it.
Your pulse rate is always higher right after you engage in rushing around.

Donna J. Jodhan! Accessibility Advocate! A Review Of The Saint Joseph’s Oratory In Montreal

A Review Of The Saint Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal
By Donna Jodhan
Award winning advocate and sight loss coach

Introduction:
This most Sacred and high profile landmark in Montreal is definitely one for visitation and I am just so pleased that I was able to revisit it in 2024 with my dear friend Cathie.

So how would I rate their services? With 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest, here are my ratings.
Service desk assistance – 5
Assistance for guests with special needs – 5
Assistance at restaurant – 5

Remarks :
Access to the restaurant was extremely user friendly for a vision impaired person and navigating among the tables was not very difficult.

About Oratory staff:
They went beyond the call of duty and were extremely helpful.

My meal:
It was delicious and extremely inexpensive.

Any suggestions?
Please keep this famous facility going for ever!
