Ask sight loss coach Donna J. Jodhan – Finding wooden spoons for stirring the pot, Cooking rice and pasta in the microwave, cooking bacon in the microwave without making a mess

Ask the Coach!

February 2024

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this month :  a question from Ryan in Dublin Ireland.

Ryan is looking for Finding wooden spoons for stirring the pot

My response:

Ryan, I like using wooden spoons to stir my pot.

You can find them in almost every kitchen store or even in a hardware store.

Wooden spoons are much better when using to stir your pot as they do not scratch the bottom of your pot.

Rubber made spoons are also quite good.

I hope this helps.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

a question from Lilli in Budapest Hungary.

Lilli would like to know if there is a way to cook rice and pasta in the microwave.

My response:

Lilli, yes!  I believe that there are those special gadgets or pots that you can use in your microwave.

They have a cover, are very easy to place in your microwave, and I recently came across one at a kitchen store.

I hope that this helps.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

a question from Shane in Saint Lewis Missouri.

Shane is wondering about Finding a way to cook bacon in the microwave without the bacon splattering.

My response:

Absolutely Shane and I recently bought one of those special gadgets that you can use when cooking bacon in your microwave.

It is a neat little gadget and has a cover to prevent your bacon from splattering in your microwave.

Nothing worse than having to clean up after bacon has splattered in your microwave.

I bought my bacon cooker at www.blindmicemegamall.com

Ask sight loss coach Donna J. Jodhan for January – Special plates for the microwave, where to find roasting bags, where to find freezer bags

Ask the Coach!

Jan 2024

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this month:  a question from Andray in Montreal Quebec.

Andray is looking for special plates for the microwave

My response:

Andray, fortunately it is easy to purchase special plates for the microwave.  You can buy them in almost every kitchen supplies store or even at a hardware store.

The material is quite good; durable and not too bulky.  Many people use them so as to preserve their own regular plates.

I have bought a set recently; a set of four and I use them regularly.

I hope this helps.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

a question from Josh in Atlanta Georgia.

Josh is looking for roasting bags

My response:

Josh, roasting bags are very available almost everywhere.  At the supermarket.  At a kitchen supplies store, and even at a hardware store.

I find that roasting bags are easy to use and help to minimize spills and leaks when roasting any sort of meat.  You just place your meat in them, then place in a roasting pan, and voila!  Ready to put into your oven.

If you want to save time and avoid those headaches, then by all means!  Take advantage of those easy to use roasting bags.

I hope that this helps.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

a question from Niko in Athens Greece.

Nico is looking for freezer packs

My response:

Niko Once again, freezer packs are very available almost everywhere.

At your supermarket, at a kitchen supplies store, and even at a hardware store.

I use freezer packs for so many things.

These would include:

When I wish to ice any part of my body; the knee, the foot, when I am fighting a headache I place at the back of my neck, and o yes!

I use freezer packs whenever I am bringing frozen food home from the supermarket on a hot summer’s day.

I take my freezer packs out of my freezer and place them in an insulated bag and pack them around my meats.  This ensures that my meats and ice cream and anything else frozen remains frozen until I arrive at my house.

I hope that this helps.

What is your emergency kit?

We are now living in a travel world whereby losing one’s luggage is becoming more and more of a reality. I learned this only too well when I traveled to Portugal in the Spring of 2022.

A growing number of travelers have decided to take over stuffed carry on luggage onto the aircraft so that they would not need to worry about losing their luggage. I for one however still prefer to pack my suitcase but here are some things that you can stuff into your carry on in order to defend against lost luggage.
Keep in mind that this little kit should be able to keep you going for a day or two until you retrieve your lost luggage or you are able to buy replacements.

First, make sure that those little things you take conform to the size limit.
Toothpaste and tooth brush.
Shampoo.
Hair brush.
Deodourant.
Hand or body lotion.
Body wash.
A change of clothes.
Underwear.
Razor blades if necessary.

This should be enough to keep you fresh and clean as you wait for your luggage to be delivered

A bit of this and a bit of that from Donna’s did you know diary
January 2024
A bit of this and a bit of that from Donna’s did you know diary
Award winning sight loss coach, author and advocate

Welcome to my Donna’s did you know diary for January and pleased to share the following with you.

Here’s what I learned for this month.
• Using foil when warming food
Using foil to warm food is a very useful and time saving tip.
Wrap food in foil before putting it to warm in your toaster oven.

• A tip on frying or scrambling eggs:
First, put a splash of oil and a small gob of butter in your frying pan.
Second, make sure that oil and butter are well mixed in.
Then turn the heat on high
Next when the oil and butter mixture start to heat up, turn the heat to low
And then pour in your egg mix.
Finally cook according to your choice of either scrambling or frying.

• And here is what I learned this month about the honey bee!
“Bees are very social insects, and mutual feeding seems to be the order of their existence. The workers feed the helpless queen, who cannot feed herself. They feed the drones and, of course, they feed the young. They seem to actually enjoy this social act. One bee always seems ready to feed another bee, even if that bee is from a different colony. The bee has been aptly described as busy.

To produce one tablespoon of honey for our toast, the little bee makes 4,200 trips to flowers. A worker bee will fly as far as eight miles in search of nectar. He makes about 10 trips a day to the fields, each trip lasting 20 minutes and covering 400 flowers. To produce just one pound of clover honey, the bee must visit 56,000 clover heads. Since each head has 60 flower tubes, a total of 3,360,000 visits are necessary. In the end, that worker bee will have flown the equivalent of three times around the world. And they never sleep!

The impact of the honeybee on your food goes beyond honey. This little wonder of God’s creation is responsible for 80 percent of all insect pollination; if it didn’t do its job it would significantly decrease the yield of fruits and vegetables.
• And a tip on how to use flour
If you store flour in the fridge, best to use it as follows:
Remove flour from the fridge, let stand for about half hour or so, then use.
Do not use the flour while it is still cold.
Best to use it at room temperature.

• Some suggestions to deal with an upset stomach!
In a glass of warm water, add a few drops of Angastura bitters.
Or you can have a candy ginger piece of candy.
And here are 2 other suggestions:
A glass of Ginger ail,
A glass of coke but make sure that it is flat,
A cup of hot lemon tea,
Or a cup of hot ginger tea.

• Something interesting about Granny smith apples
They are the best for baking because they are firm and have a tart flavour.

• About apple juice
Good to drink when you have a cold.
Either warm or cool.

• Having problems removing rings from fingers or bangles from hands or wrists?
Just apply a healthy amount of hand cream or hand soap and voila!
It will come off with consummate ease!

Tell tale signs of a scammer
If you receive an email with badly worded English grammar or mispellings, then we guarantee that it is from a scammer.
Or if you receive an automated phone call, this is yet another tell tale sign.
Finally, if the phone call is from a person with a heavy accent then this too is a tell tale sign.
Especially so if the caller’s English is difficult to comprehend.

Ask sight loss coach Donna J. Jodhan – how to find special warming plates for the microwave

Ask the Coach!

Jan 07 2024

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this week:  a question from Andray in Montreal Quebec.

To contact me with a question or a thought; please send an email to me at donnajodhan@gmail.com and I’ll be sure to respond in 5 business days at the most.

If you wish me to respond earlier then put the word important in your subject line and I’ll do my best to respond more quickly.

Until the next time then!

I’m Donna wishing you a pleasant day and thanking everyone for their insightful feedback and suggestions!
