Ask sight loss Coach Donna J. Jodhan – Ways to overcome online banking challenges, best ways to order from restaurants, how can a blind person tell when a bulb is blown

Ask the Coach!

April 2024

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this month:  a question from Bruce in Lewisville Kentucky.

Bruce is looking for ways to overcome online banking challenges.

My response:

Bruce, I can guarantee that every bank offers a variation in their online banking system.

Some banks offer more accessible online banking than others.

Then, we need to factor in the technical abilities of each individual customer along with the technology that they use.

Some customers use their computers while others use an I device.

While still others get assistance from their banking officers while others ask a friend or family member to help them.

So what I am saying is that it all comes down to what best fits one’s needs.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

A question from Melissa in Kansas City Missouri.

Melissa wants to know what is the best way to order from restaurants.

My response:

Melissa and again; it all depends on how comfortable it is for you to place an order with a restaurant.

You can either use an app to do your ordering if one exists and you can check for the availability of said app by visiting the App Store to see if you can find it there.

If it is available, you can download it but then you need to ensure that it is accessible and user friendly and navigable.

It all depends on how comfortable you are with using apps.

Then there is the good old way by using your phone to place an order.

Believe it or not, many restaurants still offer the phone option.

However, using an app is often much quicker when it comes to delivery.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

A question from Maria in Atlanta Georgia.

Maria wants to know how can she as a blind person know when a bulb is blown?

My response:

Maria, if you can reach your bulb then it is not too difficult.

Just place your hand gently and gingerly over the bulb and if it is warm then it is still working.

If it is cold then it is blown.

It is often difficult to know if a bulb has blown if you are unable to reach it unless you check your bulbs regularly.

For sighted persons, not a problem.

For a vision impaired person, not so.

If you really want to keep tabs on if your bulbs are working then you will probably need some sighted assistance if you are vision impaired.

You can also you an app on your I device to help you detect whether or not there is light coming from your bulb.  Or there is a hand held light detector on the market as well.

Finally the Envision glasses offers an option for detecting light.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

To contact me with a question or a thought; please send an email to me at donnajodhan@gmail.com and I’ll be sure to respond in 5 business days at the most.

If you wish me to respond earlier then put the word important in your subject line and I’ll do my best to respond more quickly.

Until the next time then!

I’m Donna wishing you a pleasant day and thanking everyone for their insightful feedback and suggestions!

From the pages of Donna’s did you know diary – a bit of this and a bit of that for March 2024

March 2024

A bit of this and a bit of that from Donna’s did you know diary

Award winning sight loss coach, author and advocate

Welcome to my Donna’s did you know diary for this month and pleased to share the following with you.

Here’s what I learned for this month.

Practical and natural!

  • Want to cool down your cup of hot coffee or tea?

It is very simple!

Place a tea spoon in your cup and voila!

The liquid will cool very quickly.

  • Looking for ways to better pack your suitcase?

Purchase yourself a pack of packing cubes and these are in various colours and the material is nylon.

There are 4 different sizes and about 8 packing cubes in the pack.

You can now proceed to sort your clothes and pack them neatly in each pack according to the size of your clothes.

They can be rid of air by squeezing down the cube before zipping them up.

They are readily available online and at several stores.

  • Want to keep your wine fresh after opening the bottle?

Simply put the bottle to lie down after you have opened and poured out the desired amount of wine.

Either in the fridge or in your cupboard in a dark corner.

  • Want to make sure that you do not over eat?

Here’s a quick tip.

Drink one 8 ounce glass of water about half hour before eating your meal.

  • Some interesting trivia about cats!

For whereas many of us believe that cats love bowls of milk, that it is what they love,

That it is good for them,

In truth and in fact cats are lactose intolerant!

  • When trying to make crackling with your pork!

Rub the skin with a bit of oil before you pop into the oven for baking.

  • 3 practical and natural ingredients for an upset or bloated stomach?

Make a tea out of any of the following.

Ginger, garlic, lemon.

  • And here are 2 very practical and logical tips for old versus new!

Probably best not to sew a patch onto an old hole in a garment and why?

Because you will find that the new patch will rip away from the old hole.

Likewise, best not to put new wine into an old skin and why?

Because the new wine will burst the old skin.

  • What’s this about finding cheaper flight routs?

Yes, this is true!

Booking a direct flight is more expensive than booking an indirect flight!

  • What’s this about the benefits of using Salve?

Here goes.

If you want to extract the bad stuff out of boils, bruises, and blisters; here’s what you do!

Put some salve on the offending spot.

Place a bandage over it.

And remove the bandage in a few hours.

Voila! Much better.

A Review of the Apple Store in the Fairview Mall – A Store with the True Accessibility Spirit

A photo of the front entrance of the Apple Store at Fairview Mall.

A Review of the Apple Store in the Fairview Mall
by Donna Jodhan, award-winning advocate and sight-loss coach

Introduction:
Despite its constant activity, this store continues to exude top notch service.
It’s just like a huge family gathering when one enters.

So how would I rate their services? With 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest, here are my ratings.
Service desk assistance – 5
Assistance for customers with special needs – 5
Assistance at store – 5

Remarks :
Access to the store was extremely user friendly for a vision impaired person and navigating among the aisles was not very difficult.

About store staff:
Warm, welcoming, friendly, and very knowledgable about their products and what they sell.

Any suggestions?
Keep up your wonderful work! You are a fine example to the industry!

You can find this store at the Fairview Mall in North York Toronto.

1) Best Of Helpful Hints: The Best Of Hints For Children

Tips For The Newborn

* to allow mother a few extra hours sleep, use perfume freely on yourself when baby first comes home from the hospital. Later dab your perfume on baby’s crib sheets or pillow. He/she will smell the mama smell and feel safe and content.

* If baby bubbles a bit after feedings, and must be changed frequently to keep him/her smelling sweet, try this: moisten a cloth with water, dip it into baking soda and dab at the dribble. The odor will disappear.

* Use baby’s infant seat for bathing in the bathtub. Remove pad and buckle strap and place a large folded bath towel in the seat. Place baby in seat, and put in water. Now you can use both hands.

* Keep a heating pad beside baby’s crib and when he/she is up for his night feedings, turn the pad on warm and place on crib matress. When you put baby back down, his/her bed will be nice and warm and he/she will settle down more quickly. Be sure to remove the heating pad.

Important tips from the travel table
From the pages of Donna’s diary
An ideal travel agent

In my humble opinion, the ideal travel agent is one who is always willing and ready to help you from start to finish.
It all starts when I present my favourite travel agent with an idea for a trip.
Next she goes away and does a thorough search of my desired location that includes air fare, hotels, and activities at my desired location.

She presents me with about 3 choices and shares the pros and cons with me for each choice.
Then she reccomends her own personal choice.
She is patient, innovative, and creative.
She takes the time to plan with me and does not complete her job until I have either chosen something or I have decided not to pursue my intentions.

That’s my ideal travel agent! Very knowledgeable, resourceful and always ready to answer my questions.
I’m Donna J. Jodhan enjoying my travels.

A bit of this and a bit of that from Donna’s did you know diary

Welcome to my Donna’s did you know diary for March and pleased to share the following with you.

Here’s what I learned for this month.
1)A bit of interesting trivia
“Bald eagles primarily eat fish and can live up to 40 years in the wild. Furthermore, they are monogamous and remain faithful to their mate until death. These amazing birds are especially renowned for their excellent eyesight. Eagles have two foveae, or centers of focus, in the retina of each eye that allow them to see both forward and to the side at the same time. (Human retinas have only one.)
Depending on which way an eagle looks, the lens of its eye focuses an image on one fovea or the other. The rear fovea is for forward, stereoscopic vision, and the other is for looking sideways. Both foveae are more densely lined with rods and cones than those of human eyes, giving them much greater resolving power.
Eagles have color vision, and while their eyes are not as large as a human’s, their sharpness is at least four times that of a person with perfect vision. While soaring, gliding, or flapping, they are capable of seeing fish in the water from several hundred feet above the surface or identify a rabbit moving almost a mile away. An eagle flying in a fixed position at an altitude of 1,000 feet could spot prey as small as a mouse over an area of almost three square miles!

2) Okay, and what is the difference between ointment and cream?
Ointment is thicker than cream and more care needs to be taken when spreading ointment.
It is easier to spread cream.

3) About one’s hands
The hand’s complex anatomy consists of 27 bones, 27 joints, 34 muscles, over 100 ligaments and tendons, numerous blood vessels, nerves, and soft tissue. It is important to understand the normal anatomy of the hand in order to learn about diseases and conditions that can affect our hands.
Our ability to function in everyday life depends a great deal on our hands. Feeding one’s self, bathing and a wide range of other tasks would not be possible without hands. It’s hard to imagine a life without two of them, but we all have seen or known some who has had to make such a life changing adjustment.

4) What exactly is a sheet pan?
Well, a sheet pan is used when cooking veggies and meat together.
It is good for one meal combinations.

5) What’s this about tea?
Brewing tea leaves tastes better than using a tea bag.

6) About prolonging the life of strawberries?
Cut them up into small slices and sprinkle sugar over them.
Store in a container.

7. About your phone charger?
It consists of the connector and a charger block
you insert one end of the connector into the block
and the other end into your I device.

8) Making it easier to cut your nails?
Soak your nails in warm water for just a few minutes before cutting.

That’s it for this month.

Ask sight loss Coach Donna J. Jodhan – keeping food fresh in the fridge, omlet makers for the microwave, dealing with spills in the microwave

Ask the Coach!

March 2024

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this month:  a question from Nikki in Stokholm Sweden.

Nikki would like to know if there are ways to cover dishes and open containers of food before placing them in the fridge?

My response:

Nikki:  and the answer is a definite yes!

I use stretch tops made of silicon.

They are very good, keeps food fresh, and most of all they are very flexible.

They stretch very well and I use them all of the time.

I hope that this helps.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

a question from Shaun in Miami Florida.

Shaun would like to know if there are omelet makers for the microwave.

My response:

Shaun and a definite yes!

They are several on the market.

I have used one for several years now.

It makes good omelets, and it saves a lot of time.

Some folks may still prefer to cook their omelets on the stove top.

Microwave omelet makers usually have to compartments.

So you place your egg mixture into one side then you place your toppings into the other side.

Then you  take the side with the topping and close it over the side.

Then cook away.

Omelet makers usually come with instructions as to how long to cook for and actually how to prepare your mixture and topping.

a question from Heather in Providence Road Island.

Heather is looking for a way to deal with spills in her microwave.

My response:

Hear and yes!  I recommend that you purchase those microwave mats designed to avoid spills.

I use a silicon mat in my microwave.

It is round, and it heats your food really well.

The food heats evenly.

What I like about my mat is that it is easy to handle.

You can remove your dish or plate from the microwave with the mat under dish or plate.

The mat is not going to slip away.

A bit of this and a bit of that from donna’s monthly diary – what I learned for February

February 2024

A bit of this and a bit of that from Donna’s did you know diary

Award winning sight loss coach, author and advocate

Practical and natural!

Welcome to my Donna’s did you know diary for this month and pleased to share the following with you.

Here’s what I learned for this month.

  • Valuable tips about how to use various oils when cooking and baking:

A good virgin olive oil is a regular go to for cooking and especially salad dressings.

Use for cooking on low to medium heat.

Peanut oil is great for higher heat,

frying and stir-frying but should be used in moderation.

Not for people with nut allergies.

Some baking requires oil, such as muffins,

but you want a lighter oil for that such as canola oil.

Sesame oil is used in moderation for Chinese and Asian cooking.

The general go to is olive oil.

It is heart healthy.

  • About prescriptions:

A good tip is to throw them out about six months after they expire.

However, you need to make sure that you know the date of expiration.

  • Looking to have the dishes on your dish rack dry faster?

Wash and rinse in hot water.

  • A soothing remedy for itchy skin?

Wash gently with a cotton ball or piece of cotton dipped in Witch Hazel!

  • And here is something of note for drinking glasses.

You need to clean them regularly.

Clean with a damp cloth.

Because if you don’t, they can dry rot.

  • Some important info about ants.

They enter your home in order to seek food and shelter.

To keep them out then;

Seal your food stuffs and plug your crevices.

Ants love sweet stuff.

You may want to use honey pots to keep them out.

  • Scientists found these facts about only children.

They get higher grades.

In fact, the more siblings a child has, the harder it is for them to make good grades.

Say researchers, “As family size increases, parents talk less to each child

about school, have lower educational expectations, save less for college,

and have fewer educational materials available.”

but have no fear! By fifth grade, researchers find that only children’s social skills have developed so well that they’re on par with their peers.

They struggle in kindergarten. Well, struggle socially anyway!

Only children may show signs of having greater language perception and processing skills.

  • Some yearend terms from the Oxford dictionary

*   Anosmia — the loss of the sense of smell, either total or in part

Many people who contracted Covid-19 have suffered from anosmia.

* Riz — “,” a shortened form of “charisma,”

The Gen Z slang term derived from “charisma”

This term  went viral this year after the  actor Tom Holland claimed to have none.

* Swiftie. A term used for a  pop fan of Taylor Swift.

* “beige flag” a characteristic suggesting a partner is  boring),
