Current Affairs

Donna’s evaluation of the Air Canada’s accessibility web page
On July 15, Donna traveled to the Toronto offices of Air Canada to participate in a user testing session.
There were a number of Air Canada team members on hand; both in person and virtually.
The session went very well and moving forward Air Canada will be working diligently to ensure that all accessibility standards are implemented.

Donna’s participation in the Eye Retreat camp.
From July 29 – August 02, and thanks to DR. Alan Chase, Donna taught 2 courses virtually to 20 kids.
These courses were Advocacy 101 to students seeking to develop skills when advocating for services before entering college and
Entrepreneurship 101 to students seeking to develop a self employment option.
Info on the Eye Retreat camp is as follows.
The Envisioning Youth Empowerment Retreat was born after passage of the North Carolina Disability History and Awareness Month Act. This legislation mandated that public schools teach disability history, famous people with disabilities, and disability characteristics. Specifically, the legislation suggested that individuals with disabilities be utilized to provide some of the instruction. Our founder, Dr. Alan Chase, was involved in advocating for passage of the legislation and supported curriculum development for implementation in the public schools. Thus, the EYE Retreat was born in 2008.

Why us?

First and foremost, 100% of our leaders and mentors have visual impairments. Our leaders and mentors are successful adults who are either gainfully employed or attending post secondary institutions. Second, our philosophy focuses on the power of peer mentoring. Our mentors help students to develop a toolbox of skills and resources by leading courses on a variety of topics, such as self-advocacy, transitioning to college life, career exploration, and soft skills for employment, that will support them in their future pathways Finally, our mentors guide students in bridging theory into practice by facilitating real world application of skills in the community, such as riding public transportation, navigating a college campus, and visiting local businesses.

Mission:

Our mission is to provide an opportunity for youth with visual impairments to experience a glimpse of post secondary outcomes (employment, college, etc) through development of mentoring relationships, real world applications, and identification of available resources.

Vision:

Our vision is to empower and create a community of lifelong learners who will have the tools necessary to be successful in their education, careers, and lives.

Moto:

“I Retreat From No Challenge!”

Ask sight loss Coach Donna J. Jodhan – How to save fresh herbs, best way to store dried herbs, how freezer packs can work for sore knees

Ask the Coach!

August 2024

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this month:

a question from Freida in Copenhagen Denmark.

Freida would like to know how she can go about saving fresh herbs.

My response:

O yes Freida and not too long ago I came across a neat little fresh herb saver.

I found this nifty product on the blind mice mega mall  website.

It is easy to use and here is their contact info.

Call the Blind Mice Order Center: Monday – Friday 9 AM- 4 PM Central

Tel 866 922-8877

Email: sales@blindmicemegamall.com

However, if you live outside the US you may need to have someone in the US receive your package and then forward onto you.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

A question from Janie in Bangor Maine.

Janie would like to know the best way to store dried herbs.

My response:

Janie, dried herbs usually come in either bottles or bags.

If they come in a bottle then I suggest that you leave it in the bottle.

However, if they come in a bag then there some options.

Upon opening the bag you could leave the herbs in the bag and use a magnetic clip to keep it closed.

I would store it in the fridge.

Or you can empty the bag into an air tight jar.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

It’s important for us to share how we do things!

A question from Scott in Miami Florida.

Scott would like to know if small ice freezer packs could work for sore knees?

My response:

Scott, indeed! Small ice freezer packs work extremely well for sore knees.

I often use them to relieve my knees whenever I am in pain.

They work very well for injured

Knees and you can even use them for sore elbows.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Important tips from the travel table

From the pages of Donna’s diary
The passport renewal process

Now, I am only going to cover what takes place here in Canada.
So here goes.

* To be on the safe side, make sure to renew your passport no more than six months before you travel.
* Get 2 passport sized photos.
* You can renew at a passport office but here is the trick.
You can either go to the counter where you can do it quickly and receive it in a matter of days.
Or you can go to the counter where it takes longer because you need to fill out an application.
* To do it more quickly, just go in with your form already completed.

I believe that in the case where you are applying for a new passport it is a similar process.
Good luck.

A bit of this and a bit of that from Donna’s did you know diary

August 2023
A bit of this and a bit of that from Donna’s did you know diary
Award winning sight loss coach, author and advocate

Welcome to my Donna’s did you know diary for this month and pleased to share the following with you.

Here’s what I learned for this month.
1) Some types of vacation for you to keep in mind:
Vacation – away from home.
Stay cation – vacation at home
Work cation – a combination of a vacation or stay cation and working while you vacation.
2) And what do the sleep experts recommend for the right number of hours for sleep at night?
According to them 7 to 8 hours.
Guess I need to increase my own number of hours.

3) This may be a bit late for the summer but never the less:
There are 2 types of sun rays and these are UVA and UVV.
It is always better to use sun protectors that are lotions as opposed to using a spray and why?
Because you stand less of a chance of inhaling your sun protector.

4) Some suggestions for flavouring your water?
You can use any of the following:
Slices of lemon or orange
Slices of cucumber
Lettuce leaves.

5) Here is an interesting tip on plants.
Yes indeed! They help to purify the around them and a good idea to keep them in your home.

6) About dandruff?
Dandruff comes about as a result of a dry scalp and shampoo conditioner really does not help.
You should be looking at using an overnight serum product to help you here.

7) And it’s all about diamonds!
Did you know that there are home grown diamonds and natural diamonds?
Home grown diamonds come from labs
While natural diamonds come from mines.
The natural diamonds are more expensive than the home grown ones.

8) What is the difference between a bloody Caesar and a bloody Mary?
The bloody Caesar is made using Motts Clomato juice
While the bloody Mary is used using tomato juice.

From the scam watchers

Ah yes! It is August but scammers and ther scams never sleep and here is our scam tip for this month.
If you are vacationing with your kids, keep them very close to you as those scammers are only too ready to grab them and then they pounce!
They have ways to contact you via text or your cell phone number.
They do their homework before they pounce so they know which kid they are grabbing and from which family!

Practical and natural!

Welcome to my Donna’s did you know diary for this month and pleased to share the following with you.

Here’s what I learned for this month.

  • Interesting reading about elephants!

1)         The most obvious characteristic of elephants, besides their massive size, is their trunk.

An elephant’s trunk is nothing more than an elongation of their nose and upper lip,

but it is the most versatile of all mammalian creations.

The trunk is composed of an estimated 150,000 muscles

and is employed as a nose, arm, hand,

and multipurpose tool to pull branches off trees,

uproot grass, pluck fruit, and to place food in their mouths.

The trunk is also used for smelling, trumpeting, drinking, greeting, or throwing dust for dust baths.

Elephant tusks are elongated upper incisors and are the largest and heaviest teeth of any living animal.

The tusks are used for digging for roots and water, stripping the bark off trees for food,

defense from predators,

and fighting each other during mating season.

Elephant tusks grow continuously throughout the elephant’s life.

They can grow as long as 10 feet and weigh as much as 150 pounds each.

  • A tip on saving water when doing your laundry

It is always best to turn off the taps after you have done your laundry.

Not doing so will only serve to waste water.

  • Some tips about weight

If you find that your shoes are fitting you slacker then you may have lost some weight.

  • About having airplane mode on

Best to have airplane mode on while staying at a hotel.

This way you ensure that you do not incur unnecessary wi-fi connection charges.

  • About Aspirin

You can take Aspirin to help you settle an upset or Nauseous tummy

  • About egg shells

Grind up egg shells to make fertilizer.

Feed them to your hens to help them produce healthy eggs and chicks.

  • About coffee grinds

Use coffee grinds to help you fertilize your garden beds.

  • about deer

The white tail deer use their tails to warn their fellow deer of pending danger.

They swish them in the air.

  • About best before dates

They are particularly important when checking meat and deary products.

  • About shrink flation

This term applies to shrinking packages of food and rising prices.

Ask the Coach!

July 2024

My name is Donna Jodhan and I am using my extensive experience as a sight loss coach as well as my lived experience to share and respond to questions that are submitted to me and I also invite you to share your thoughts on questions asked.

For this month:

a question from Dena in Boston Massachusetts.

Dena wants to know if there is such a thing as roasting bags.

My response:

Dena, o yes!  Most definitely!

I use these quite often for roasting my chicken!

They work very well and they certainly help to make things easy to clean up!

They certainly produce meat that is yummy and hearty.

I use them more for roasting chicken!

I simply love them and you can buy them at almost any supermarket.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Tell us what you think!  Share your feedback and let’s get more ideas cracking!

A question from Shaun in Billings Montana.

Shaun wants to know if there is something like chopping mats for chopping vegetables on his kitchen counter.

My response:

Most definitely Shaun.

Again, I can certainly vouch for this as about 2 years ago I bought a set of 3.

They are very easy to use.

Just spread them on your kitchen counter and then chop your vegetables.

The good thing about these chopping mats is that they protect your counter top from getting nicked with your knife.

They made of a very flexible plastic material.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

A question from Katie in Brisbane Australia.

Katie is looking for a kitchen gadget that can zest and grate; an all in one of these.

My response:

Katie, and yes! Such a thing does indeed exist.

A friend of mine made me a gift of it last year.

It works really well.

You can do both zesting and grating with the same gadget.

I am pretty sure that you can buy one of these nifty gadgets at any kitchen store.
