Why Using a Registry Cleaner Won't Speed Up Your PC or Fix Crashes

What You Said: Have Registry Cleaners Helped Your Computer. Ever? http://www.howtogeek.com/57637/what-you-saidhave-registry-cleaners-helped-yo ur-computer-ever/ What You Said: Have Registry Cleaners Helped Your Computer. Ever? Earlier this week we asked you to share your experiences with Windows registry cleaning applications. You responded with hundreds of… [Read Article referred to above.] No legitimate benchmarks showing a performance increase as a result of a registry cleaner have ever been released. If a registry cleaner offered boosted performance, we would have some benchmarks by now. It’s anecdotal evidence, but the majority of our readers didn’t find that registry cleaners helped improve their performance on modern computers, either. In Some Rare Cases. Now, it’s theoretically possible that a registry cleaner could help in some rare cases. For example, if a program left behind an invalid context menu entry in your registry, it’s possible that your context menu would take noticeably longer to appear in Windows Explorer when you right-clicked on something. It’s also possible that a registry cleaner would notice and remove this entry for you, solving the problem. In another case, you might have a ten-year-old computer with a very small amount of RAM and a Windows installation that’s seen thousands of programs installed and uninstalled over the case of a decade. A registry cleaner might theoretically help shrink the size of the registry enough to make the computer perform faster. Such situations are bound to be extremely rare. There’s no point in running a registry cleaner constantly. Many registry cleaner companies recommend running their cleaner once a week. Such problems would be better dealt with by solving them when you encounter them. It’s likely that the average registry cleaner would cause many more problems than it fixes if it were run on a regular basis. And even if it’s completely harmless, it’s a waste of your time. So If a Registry Cleaner Won’t Speed Things Up, What Will? We’ve already covered why PCs slow down over time and shown you how to prevent this from happening. (Notice the article posted Wednesday October 2nd, in Dan’s Tips.) Rather than run a registry cleaner, you should just be careful about what you install in the first place. Even if you need to uninstall something later, a few registry entries , or even a lot of registry entries – won’t cause a slow down. If your computer is hideously slow or crashing frequently, you likely have more problems than a full registry and you’re probably better off reinstalling Windows or refreshing your PC. RELATED ARTICLES HTG Explains: Do You Really Need to Regularly Reinstall Windows? http://www.howtogeek.com/168528/htg-explains-do-you-really-need-to-regularly -reinstall-windows/ For many people, Windows seems to slow down over time. Quite a few people fix this by regularly reinstalling Windows…. [Read Article] Beginner Geek: How to Reinstall Windows on Your Computer http://www.howtogeek.com/133254/beginner-geek-how-to-reinstall-windows-on-yo ur-computer/ Reinstalling Windows is one of the easiest ways to fix software problems on your computer, whether it’s running slow or… [Read Article] We didn’t dwell on this part too much, but registry cleaners can also cause damage. There are so many different registry entries that could be present from so many different software programs that the average registry cleaner put together by a less-than-reputable software company can’t possibly account for them all. If a registry cleaner tried to be too aggressive so it could clean up as many “errors” as possible, it could easily remove errors that were necessary for an installed program, causing problems. In summary, forget about registry cleaners and get on with your life. As long as you take basic care of your Windows computer, you don’t have to worry about your registry.]]>

How to Fix a Computer that Keeps Waking Up

Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are sets of functions or routines that specify how software components should interact with each other. The APIs are, to the end user, entirely invisible and function behind the scenes, handling such tasks as process thread management, error handling, rendering output for graphic user interfaces (GUIs) and other core functions that are part of the computing experience. How to Fix a Computer that Keeps Waking Up Updated 11. August 2013 – 19:00 by v.laurie http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-fix-computer-keeps-waking.htm Not too long ago I bought a new desktop PC. Whenever I put it to sleep, in no time flat it was awake again. A little research revealed that this is not an uncommon problem and can have several possible sources. Malware infections are sometimes the cause but more often it is some device that is waking the machine up and that was the case for me. In this tip, I will describe several settings in your system that may keep waking up your PC. The discussion is for Windows Vista/7. You will generally need administrator privileges to make system changes. *Step 1) Stop the mouse from waking up the PC Mice, especially, wireless mice, can sometimes wake the PC up. In fact, there is a specific setting to allow this. If the mouse turns out to be a problem, you can change the setting with this procedure: 1. Open the Start menu and type “mouse” (without quotes) in the Search bar 2. Under the Control Panel list, click “Mouse” (or just press Enter in Vista) 3. In the dialog box that opens, select the tab “Hardware” 4. Highlight the entry for your mouse and click the button “Properties” 5. A new dialog will open. Click the button “Change settings” 6. In the new dialog that opens, click the tab “Power Management” 7. Remove the check by “Allow this device to wake the computer” 8. Click “OK” and close the dialogs. *Step 2)Stop a network card from waking up the PC From what I read, a network card is the most common source of wake-up problems and that was the cause of my own computer never staying asleep. Here is how to configure a network card: 1. Open Device Manager. There are many ways to do this but a quick way is to enter “dev” (without quotes) in the Start search bar and click “Device Manager” 2. Arrow down to “network adapters” and Expand the list by pressing the right arrow. 3. There may be several adapters, one for Ethernet, one for wireless, and others like Bluetooth. Keyboard users, aArrow . down to the adapter to be configured. b. Tab to properties and press the spacebar. If using a mouse, a. Right-click the adapter to be configured b. choose “Properties”. 4. In the dialog that opens, shift-Tab to Power Management” or click this tab sheet. 5. Remove the check by “Allow this device to wake the computer” A simple way to do this is to press the spacebar. This toggles a checkbox on/off. 6. From the keyboard, tab to “okay” and press the spacebar. Then close out of device manager. Mouse users, Click “OK” and close up Device Manager *Step 3)Scheduled tasks , updates, and other causes Sometimes a task or Windows Update is scheduled for a specific time and will wake up the computer. Dealing with these and other possibilities are discussed at this link . http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/63567-power-options-sleep-mode-problems.ht ml *Step 4) Use the command line to find what causes the PC to wake up a. One way to find out what is causing a wake-up problem is provided by the command line. Open a command prompt and enter this command: powercfg -lastwake The last device that woke up the system will be shown b. To find out which devices are enabled to wake up the PC, enter this command powercfg -devicequery wake_armed Version: 2013.0.2904 / Virus Database: 3211/6598 – Release Date: 08/22/13]]>
