Would The Real World Institute On Disability Please Stand Up – Time To Put Up Or Shut Up

Would the real World Institute on disability please stand up.

And I am challenging this renowned institution to please represent its name in a transparent and honest way.

Unfortunately, I had to find out the hard way that this entity does not live up to its name.  Blatantly choosing to shut out applicants from outside the United States from working with them.

They call themselves the World Institute on Disability but sadly they are not.

They claim that their mission is to be as follows:

“The World Institute on Disability (WID) advances the inclusion, rights and justice of people with disabilities with the design and delivery of whole community solutions.”

Sounds good so far but here is where things  come to a screeching halt!

You see, the other day I decided to answer the call for participants as follows:

“Compensated Volunteering for WID

If you are over 18 years of age, are a person with a disability, and are interested in participating in future compensated research studies, you can apply to be a WID research participant using the following link

https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/7267457/WID-Research-Participant-Application

My great mistake here is that I honestly thought that based on their esteemed name this was open to everyone worldwide but no!  I was a Canadian whose application was soundly rejected.

Here is what I call a very lame and horrible apology from a             Senior Accessibility and Universal Design Specialist

3075 Adeline Street, Suite 155, Berkeley, CA 94703 WID Logo

“Unfortunately, we are only accepting research participants who are located in the US at this time. We hope to expand our database outside the country in the future, but currently, the application will disqualify anyone who doesn’t live in the United States. We apologize for any inconvenience!”

This apology in my respectful view is totally unacceptable.  It is totally discriminatory and if you were not going to accept applicants outside of the United States then you should have put this on your website.

I can only urge you to correct this grave error or maybe think seriously of changing your name.  How could you honestly call yourself a world institute when you do not accept applicants from other countries?

This picture definitely does not compute or resonate!

My final thoughts?

This so-called institute that titles itself as such really needs to be called out and we demand that they change their policy to match their name.

Just my two cents for today.
